Maybe Locke will be this year's Kolanos?

Now they need to trade for Aaron Ness, a defenceman with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (Islanders system).
Then the Heat will have the Locke-Ness monster.

After reading the comments on this form, I think everyone is right.
1) with billins and Russell, we don't have room for an almost ready, undersized NHL defenseman.
2) Cundari has looked good on the heat and is young so probably does have value in a trade. He might be worth something to a team with a stock of large defensemen, and in need of a #5 or #6. Perhaps we can get a RW prospect back in return.
3) The heat will be full of defensive prospects next year.
Conclusion: Perhaps Cundari is being put into a situation where his skills can be showcased. He might be being dressed up for a trade. I wonder if the flames will call him up pre-deadline to showcase him in the NHL.

Great trade Feaster.
Fun fact: Cundari has a higher points/game in the NHL than any player in the organization.
|
Billins: 1.00PPG (2 assists in 2 career games).
Cundari: 0.75PPG (1 goal 2 assists in 4 career games).
But yeah, that trade started off looking kinda weak, and has only gotten worse.

I think that's overly harsh.
Prospecting is not an exact science (especially with young defensemen). So you should acquire as many as you can and then wait to see which ones rise to the top.
To call the others mistakes is an injustice to the process IMO.

Sounds like this trade is more about the wolves needing a pp specialist than Cundari being given up on by the organization.

" The Chicago Wolves have struggled so much on the power play they were willing to trade their leading scorer in order to do something about it.
Center Corey Locke, a six-time AHL all-star and former MVP, was sent to the Abbotsford Heat on Thursday. The Wolves received defenseman Mark Cundari on loan from the Heat's parent club, Calgary. The Flames retain Cundari's NHL rights.
"We thought needed another offensive defenseman," Wolves coach John Anderson said "

Remember Porier. That is the only piece I really cared about.

I think Cundari is the perfect acquisition for the Wolves. He is familiar with the majority of the team since they are more or less his old Peoria team.
I actually think this is good for everyone involved. The Heat get a forward, The Wolves get a defenseman and Cundari "goes back" to a team he was pretty successful with.

And Locke has familiarity with Ward since they were together in Houston.

Is Locke with the Heat on loan, or is it a permanent trade? It's fairly clear that Cundari's rights remain with the parent club, but since Locke is on an AHL deal is he permanently with the Heat? I find it a little confusing...

Locke is permanently with the Heat. Abbotsford traded for his contract (which expires after this season) in exchange for loaning Cundari to the Wolves.

I wonder if another reason that Cundari was loaned out was expectation of O'Brien joining the Heat as well

Speaking of Poirier, He is currently sitting at 64 points, 31 goals 33 assists in 45 games.
