Really the Flames took the two worst contracts by far. Search for one more year was okay. O'Brine for 2 was not....but I guess they do help get the team to the cap floor.

I know Feaster was a big fan of SOB. I remember when he picked SOB for a 1st round pick with Tampa, he was raving over him and really thought SOB was going to be a big piece for Tampa's push in the playoffs of something.
The Sarich re-sign, then trade really confused me though... a pretty frequent healthy scratch, then re-sign the guy to >1 year?

Here's hoping they assign him to the club's affiliate rocket being fired into the sun.

I was actually okay with him trying to re-invent himself as an offensive defenceman, joining rushes, doing his 'Shane-o-Rama' in the neutral zone, etc.
He was a decent producer in the AHL, and the Flames can afford to take a gamble on this kind of thing. If he could legitimately rediscover that part of his game, the Flames would be much better off as a result.
But it didn't work out. And SOB has been awful this year (in NHL terms). Just awful.
Except that one game against St Louis. He was pretty awesome that game.
I hope he finds gainful NHL employment somewhere else.

IMO, O'Brien hasn't been as physical as I expected, but otherwise has been very serviceable as a bottom pairing defenseman.
Going into last game he'd been a -7, which isn't bad considering how little offense he brings and the team has overall. He brought less stupidity and bad penalties than I expected, and did (again) a serviceable job of providing 5 or 6 shifts per period where he didn't hurt the team and spelled the top 4.
Not sure who Burke sees as more competent to step in right now.
|
Not an overreaction. He is -7 playing the easiest minutes on the team (most offensive starts, easiest quality of competition). He makes everyone he plays with noticeably worse. He isn't a great skater, he isn't physical, and he lacks hockey sense. He is a replaceable as they come, and I don't think Burke will have much difficulty finding someone who can play 11 minutes a night better than O'Brien can.

Shane O'Brien on waivers

He got a 30-40 point winger at 4 mil who is 5 years younger.
Tanguay had a modified NTC, had a history of instances that made people question his attitude through adversary, and took SO many nights off.
If you're asking me "Could we have gotten more?" Yeah, MAYBE. But not so much that it makes it a bad trade. You need to look at what the trade was (not rag on it because of some fantasy you've created about what it could have been) and quite frankly, I'd be shocked if you found more than a handful of people who would want Tanguay on this team over Jones.
At least Jones puts in an effort. Tanguay was embarrassing when he floated around the ice.
EDIT: and while Sarich is certainly much better than O'Brien this year, it's not like Sarich would've seen a whole lot of action.

And Jones doesn't take nights off? He's wildly inconsistent. It was a bad trade regardless, they traded us their two buyout candidates for Tangs and Sarich, pretty brutal.
And no probably not, Tanguay gets a bad rap around here. But like I've already said a 50-60 point winger at 3.5m should get more back then that. Surely there was a team in the offseason that felt they needed offence (ex:Phoenix, Nashville, maybe Minny).considering the Bouwmeester, Iginla and Regher it's not surprising on the return. However I'm not going to change your opinion, and I doubt this will change yours.

Jones was also a rw which going into the off season the flames were thin at.

I'd put even money on Byron getting claimed. Other than that, yeah the rest would clear.

I think he would be fantastic in the AHL, but I don't think he will be demoted. The nameplate being gone, the locker being empty before he can even clear waivers makes me believe that he won't be with the organization at all after this.

He seems to have a better attitude than Tanguay, doesn't miss as many games and is more physical. I will take the reduced offense and cap hit 500k higher for that.

He would be okay for the Heat, but it's just the fact he'd take valuable spots away.
- Breen (the team's primary shut down guy).
- Wotherspoon (has been steadily playing better and better since about Christmas).
- Billins (the team's All-Star offensive defenseman, PP QB).
- Ramage (having a tough go of it lately, but steadily improving).
- Smith (flashy, sometimes overly confident, but a great offensive guy).
- Arsene (team captain, but not very good).
- Lamb (having a good sophomore year).
- Sieloff (hurt, but Ward can't wait to have him back).
I hear what you're saying though. I'm sure O'Brien is as good as gone. I'd just rather not have him on the Heat if it came down to it.

I'm as harsh a critic as there is in regards to the former GM here, but that trade was far from his worst.
Tanguay was going to be useless without Iginla (stats have proven that), and had 3 more years, and a history of a poor attitude, which the Flames didn't need. I also don't think Hartley was a fan (this wasn't 2001 and COL anymore) either.
Same term, similar money to Jones. If Jones doesn't work out, the Flames still have two get out jail buyouts this year to use on him.
Sarich, from what I've heard from a good source, disliked Hartley fairly intensely, so he was gone somewhere else after last year anyways.
Jones has been ineffective, SOB has been ok, though not bringing the physical game as much as one would thought. Though given SOB's attitude on display over the years, I am guessing he probably didn't like the dressing down that Hartley gave him during the second intermission last night.
Overall, you had a small guy who was going to be more useless than useful and not a coach favorite, and another player that didn't want to play under this coach, and the Flames got somewhat ofa return without taking on too much salary. Shuffling the chairs on the titanic sure, but could've been worse.
