The Browns spent four hours interviewing Pettine for the second time on Tuesday night at the Senior Bowl, where coaches and personnel executives from all 32 teams are scouting top college prospects.
But the Browns left town without a deal for Pettine, 47, and headed straight to their Wednesday morning interview with Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.
ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure, who covers the Falcons, reported Wednesday that the Koetter interview has already taken place, but characterized Koetter as a longshot.
Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is also still believed to be in the mix. Quinn is preparing to play in the Super Bowl Feb. 2 against the Broncos, but can interview with the Browns for a second time by Sunday.
I'd be happiest with Quinn from that group of candidates.
I saw an ESPN 60 for 60 on Tomsula about a year ago or so. He reminded me a lot of Romeo Crennel in that the players seemed to love the guy and he really knew his craft. But I think he realized that as an interim coach at the end of the season he was successful for a game or two as a lot of the season planning was already done. If he had to run the whole staff and implement all the game planning stuff from the get go, it might be too much for him.
I was surprised to hear his name come up.
He was a head coach in NFL Europe but he has been the same position coach since Mike Nolan was head coach.

You know it was really bad before, but the Browns interviewed Greg Schiano...and apparently Josh McDaniels is back in the picture as well. Poor Browns fans, they don't deserve such a horribly run franchise.

Hah, yeah Brandon, it was all you. As much as I hate Jim Harbaugh he is one of the few top tier coaches in the NFL. 3 seasons, 3 NFC championship games and 1 title....that's pretty impressive.
A source told cleveland.com that Pettine, 47, had already been working on assembling his coaching staff while at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Pettine is associated with top-notch assistants such as former Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who's now at LSU, and Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt. It's not yet known if he'll bring them in.
As of Thursday afternoon, the Browns had not yet set up a second interview with Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
How did Pettine do in Buffalo? In New York the defense was worse after Ryan gave Pettine defensive play calling duties. I guess this is the best they could do?

Pettine spent only one season running the Bills defense, but made a big impact in his lone season there. Running a 3-4 hybrid scheme similar to what Ray Horton ran in Cleveland, Pettine's big-play unit finished 10th overall, including fourth against the pass and 28th against the run. The Bills were also second in sacks (57) and interceptions (23). Pettine coached two Bills' players to double-digits sack seasons, including defensive end Mario Williams with a team-high 13 for second-most in his career and defensive end Kyle Williams with a career-high 10.5.
The Bills finished 6-10 in 2013, including a 37-24 loss to the Browns on Oct. 3 -- but the Browns scored on a punt return and an interception return.
Pettine also served as Jets defensive coordinator from 2009-2012 under his longtime mentor Rex Ryan, who brought him with him to New York from Baltimore. At the time, Ryan said, "Mike is a rising star in this league. We’re fortunate that we were able to get him on our staff.”
Pettine's Jets defenses finished in the top 10 all four years, including No. 1 in 2009. That year, his first as an NFL coordinator, Pettine installed a completely new defense in New York and still managed to rank first in points allowed and pass defense.
I still say until they get a legit QB, it does not matter who the coach is.

Just to clarify. 2009 was also Ryan's first year as coach and he is the one who brought that defense with him. And as I stated before Ryan called all the plays until Pettine's last year with the team and we were not terrible with him doing so, but definitely not as good. Pettine left the Jets for the Bills because Ryan was taking play calling duties back. If he improved the Bills than that's a strong mark on his resume, because I wouldn't say his time in NY was that great other than he got to learn under Ryan.

Pettine did have a lot of defensive talent to work with in Buffalo though. Mario Williams healthy, they had taken Dareus with a top 3 pick recently too. The AFC East also lent itself to some decent defensive numbers too since they got to play the NFC North plus teams like the Jets and Dolphins who don't have great offences.

I can't believe I missed Jerry Jones re-signing his kicker for 7 years at a cap hit just north of $3M. Way to manage your already horrific cap situation.
Drew Brees, great quarterback, horrible at public speaking.
Quote:
"He’s a tight end,” Brees told Erik Kuselias of NBC Sports Radio. “He’s a tight end. We’re able to do a lot of creative things with him, just like we’re able to do with a lot of our offensive personnel. I feel like with Sean Payton, with our offensive system and we gear towards putting those guys in the best position to succeed according to their strengths. Jimmy Graham is six-seven, 270, he runs like a deer, he can jump and catch, he’s so strong and physical, he plays with great fire and passion, he can play the line, he can split out.”
I'm sure Jimmy Graham is happy Drew Brees says he's a tight end (even as he lines up split from the line 70% of the time), as the difference between gettting franchised as a TE and a WR is $4.5 million. I wouldn't be pissing off your number 1 target by far. Likewise, the NFLPA also probably doesn't want to hear that. I'm sure he'll walk this one back quickly.
