The Penguins are a huge addition to the Zoo, but man with the Elephants gone that's a lot of real estate they've got, especially if you include that horrible trip to the 80's in the Dinosaur area.
I love going to the Zoo though, and the Calgary Zoo is a great facility.
Screw normal boring Pandas, the Red Pandas at the Calgary Zoo are amazing creatures. Red Panda by apeddle1982, on Flickr
When you start to think about it there seems to be a lot less stuff overall at the zoo:
Rhinos - GONE
Reptiles- GONE
Nocturnal: GONE
Kangaroos: GONE
Polar Bears; GONE
Seals: GONE
What? Wow, it's obviously been a long time since I've been to the zoo.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with the space, given that the facility is quite new overall. Another large eurasian mammal that doesn't have the same social needs would be ideal. I would love to see the zoo get indian rhinos... they tend to be much more solitary creatures so might be better suited to being kept in small numbers in a zoo.
WOOOOOOOOO!!!!
The zoo announced today that an indian rhino (greater one-horned rhino) is indeed coming next summer.
Also, Komodo Dragons!!!

I looked over there new master plan a couple months ago and it is very impressive. Polar Bears and seals returning, plus the Rhino's and komodo dragons. A brand new tropical house (South American) and revamped destination africa. The lame dinosaur park will be demolished to make way for new eurasian exhibits complete with snow monkey steam pools! Check out the zoo's website to see all the plans!

Regular pandas are actually as closely related to raccoons as they are to bears. The red ones though are in the raccoon family (or whatever the biological classification is)
After shipping out what seemed like half of the zoo over the last two decades, it finally seems like they are adding more animals. It is a bonus that they are adding what I would call main event level animals. I personally think there are about 15 main event level animals that are the most impressive, popular and what most people would want to see in a zoo. Elephants, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, polar bears, grizzly bears, lions, tigers, gorillas, penguins, giant pandas, koalas, seals, secondary big cats (cougar, lynx, cheetah, jaguar, etc.), secondary primates (chimpanzee, baboon, spider money, orangutan, etc). Nice to see that upon completion they will have all of these animals minus elephants, koalas, and giant pandas (they will be here but only for 5 years). I would love to see an aquarium display someday with small sharks and cool fish!

The zoo will be starting a sage grouse breeding program for the highly endangered bird. Maybe they wouldn't be so endangered if they didn't have such a delicious-sounding name.
But this is the sort of animal that I'm all for: not a particularly glamorous animal, but one that's really cool nonetheless, and which could really benefit from a captive breeding program.

I have eaten sage grouse, MANY years ago before they were endangered and when they could still be hunted. I assure you, THEY ARE NOT DELICIOUS.
That being said, I agree with you, I'm glad they are doing what they can to protect the species.
