Ha, well sure, cherry pick the one year that it works out (and also one of the deepest drafts for Dmen ever) and ignore almost every other year where the forward is more valuable. There will always be outliers in any set of stats, but me, I'll bet on the much higher odds if all things are equal. I prefer the stupidly obvious way.
Btw, the dman drafted 15th that year has as many points as Doughty in over 100 fewer games. You don't see anyone even close to that when it comes to Stamkos and the forwards do you?
|
It is cherry picking one draft agreed. But it also shows that you pick the best players available when you get the chance and don't stick to hard rules unless you want to do something stupid.
Regarding Karlsson - first of all the Sens would likely fall all over themselves if the Kings or Blues offered up Doughty or Pietrangelo for Karlsson. And as for Karlsson falling.. in that draft its clear that after Stamkos you were probably better off taking a defenseman (Carlson, Del Zotto, Voynov, etc).
You have to be careful to look for changing trends. In the past - as has been proven - forwards were the safer picks. Is that still the case?
2008 - the forwards were the ones being picked too high
2009 - Tavares was the clear number 1, you'd pick Duchene over Hedman at this point, but you'd also move OEL up from 6 over Schenn/E.Kane (and perhaps Duchene).
2010 - Gudbranson was picked too high, but Fowler dropped and he's proven to better than most of the forwards picked above him
2011 - Probably too early to be judging now... but for the most part the forwards versus defenseman look fine.
2012 - too early but right now you'd probably take Reilly, H.Lindholm and Trouba higher (with only Galchenyuk and Hertl in the mix for forwards)
Have teams/scouts gotten better at finding the impact defensemen?

Islanders are 10 points up on us and the Panthers are 8. Once that hits 14 and 12, respectively, I'll start to feel more comfortable in our draft position. Even then only slightly. You can never underestimate experienced tankers.

Agree 100%. We have been ahead of Edmonton by 3 points it seems since the beginning of December. Playing as bad as we have over that stretch that 3 point difference is still there. I get the feeling that the Oilers are just toying with us. I figure once the trade deadline passes they will supernova tank the remaining games and finish last again. They are just to good at it.

I don't think anyone has to be worried because of the Islanders. They are still trying to get into the playoffs, and frankly, if they want to have a chance to re-sign Vanek, they have to get in. People are still putting the Isles into the tank category, but they're actually a pretty good team that has simply had a terrible start to the season, but has since turned it around. 10-3-0 in their last 13 and now only 5 points outside of that final wild card spot.

And the Panthers are 13 - 7 - 2 since Dec 5th.
Hard is it is to believe, some teams out there are actually trying to improve.

Don't get me wrong, I in no way think that the Panthers and Islanders aren't trying to be better. Just that they're so good at being incredibly bad.

Not recently. And we'd have to go on a crazy hot streak to catch them IMO which I don't see happening in the western conference.
CGY, BUF and EDM seem to be in a class of their own at sucking. We all have goal differentials around -50. FLA and NYI are considerably better in that dept.

In regards to some people on here wanting to draft Lemieux in the second round... Did you watch this guy at the prospects game? Only time I ever noticed him was when he was yapping away at the other players yelling stupid shiet after the whistle, modern day version of his dad forsure, more like Sean Avery though. Before I wrote Do. not. want... but thinking about this now, laughing a bit maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea

That kid annoyed the hell out of me. He's totally his father's son. If he makes it to the show, he's going to be "that guy". The person everyone hates but who most would like on their team.

If Ekblad isn't there, getting Bennet or Reinhart would be amazing. Looking at a guy like Peters in the 2nd round and maybe Joshua Jacobs in the 3rd to try and get some big punishing Dmen in the system.

I think Reinhart because he is a right hand shot. I honestly don't watch prospects that much so just go off hype and stat sheets

I don't understand how his dad is held in high regard either. The best memory I have of him, is him playing for Montreal and lying on the ice, faking an injury while the Habs, fed up with him, left him lying there.

Bennett, personally. But the two seem like a toss up.

Given Burke's comments about Ott et al at the Law Society deal I doubt the Flames would draft Claude Lemieux's son.

Flames don't have a ton of RH shots in the system. So if Ekblad is gone I'd lean towards Sam Reinhart. But Bennett is a very intriguing option.
Edit: They're both Sam's.

Scoring 10 playoff goals in his rookie season- and winning the Cup - caught people's notice. Going on to score a total of 80 playoff goals in his career (9th all-time), 19 of them game-winners (3rd all-time) cemented his reputation. And despite being a dirtbag, the guy's playing weight topped out at something like 225. So he wasn't exactly a pushover.

The bottom line for me is that the Flames draft either Reinhart or Ekblad if they pick 1 or 2 as I prefer to go with the overanalyzed guys over the quick risers. If they pick 3rd I'm okay with Bennett.

Did you notice him scoring the first goal of the game?
