The contract isn't done or we have no idea what it will be. No need to get fired up already.

Please explain why? This team is in a 3-5 year rebuild and needs vets to keep around during this time. The last thing this team needs to do I put all the pressure on Monahan, Sven, Wortherspoon, Sieloff, etc. if that happens we are doing things Oiler style and that is set up to fail.
If Burke trades everyone and goes to market he is overpaying for UFA's anyway or he is trading acquired assets for different players that may or may not fit. Russell and Stajan are guys who want to be here and fit in well in the room. Not a terrible idea to keep them around for the duration of the rebuild. This thing will not be over in 1-2 years as the Flames are just scratching the surface

Bottom pairing defencemen who cannot handle minutes playing against the opposition's top 6 do not deserve anything more than 2 year contracts.
Unless you want perpetual mediocrity, I suppose.

For the record, I really like Russell.
I guess we really need to see the entire body of work that Burke does between now and the begnining of October.
But so far, the Flames post Fletcher tradition of small players continues.
|
Yea, he should trade for Chara!
Getting bigger isn't something that can just happen overnight. I don't know what people expect, but making the team bigger is not an easy task.

Why was that a mistake, Flames need to sign some of the veterans or they won't be able to reach the Cap Floor next season.
Leadership is required, especially during a rebuild.

I would guess 3 years. I would think in the range of 2.8m per season.

At 26 it is really hard to say that Russell has maxed out potential wise. He could still work his way into being a top 4 guy. He missed 13 games and came back to play very well including a very nice stretch pass which resulted in a goon scoring. He is on pace for 40pts over 82 games.
Look how far Gio has come since he was 26! Russell has a really high compete level and I don't think he has reached his ceiling

Matt Stajan is not a leader. He whines, he dives, he cries. There's nothing he's good at. There's no advantage he brings for this team. He creates more chances for the opposition than almost anyone on the team. But I suppose he's a "nice guy". "Good in the locker room".
None of our young players should be heeding the advice of Matt Stajan.

Statistic wise compared to counterparts, honestly don't believe he will net an avg 3 million, though I wouldn't be opposed to it because he has played a great half a season. But in all honesty is it smart to pay him significantly more for just half a season we have seen him?

What is a Small Dmen in the NHL now?
The only one we have that is under 6 feet is Russell that I would say is our top 7
looking at TSN they list or dmen as follows
Gio is listed at 6 feet.
Brodie is 6 foot 1
Smid 6 foot 3
O'brien is 6 foot 3
Wideman is 6 feet
Butler is 6 foot 1
Russel is 5 foot 10
To be big does you Dmen have to be 6 foot 3 or else they are small? just curious

Average NHL defenseman is 6'2" so we're a little undersized yes

Just because this is your opinion does not make it true. There are reasons to not like the Stajan signing (not good enough, too long, not an impact guy, etc) but the B.S. you keep trying to relay as fact is not right.
The media and coaching staff talk about him being a leader and mentor to the young guys. But you must be right because you are the all knowing Ashasx.
He rarely whines and didn't once pout about spending a year and a half in the coaches dog house. He paid his dues on the fourth line, worked his ass off, and when injuries gave him an opportunity to work his way up the line up he took it. Your precious Sven Baertschi could learn something from Matt Stajan about not pouting when faced with some adversity.
And to say he is a diver and a cry baby is also false. There might be nobody in the NHL who gets rocked as many times as Matt Stajan, but he always bounces back up and keeps going.
Those close to the team already told you that you were wrong about Stajan not being a leader or a whiner on twitter, maybe just maybe those closer to the team have a better idea of what is going on in the locker room better than you do.

He's been in the NHL for 7 years, and has over 400 NHL games.
He's had half of a good season so far.
This might be him turning the corner, or it might just be a hot streak as he gets unprecedented minutes and responsibilities on a crappy team.
Either sign him cheap (doesnt matter how long), or sell him while he's hot. Both are a win for the Flames.

Other than O'Brien and Smid, all of those players are below the average height for an NHL defenceman (average is about 6'2).
