In a way, the longer the contract, the more you can afford to give him. Based on cap projections, a deal of 3.5 for 4 years wouldn't be bad at all.
3 for 2 would be perfect I think, but I certainly wouldn't be bothered by more on either end.

Happy about this. Russell is a good asset. Bought low, sell high In a couple of years if the kids push him out.

You simply cannot give long-term contracts to players like this during a rebuild.

Glad to hear they want to re-sign him, he has been very good for us. One of Feasters best acquisitions
I'm hoping for something like 2 years at 2.5m

I think most of us agree that he's worth keeping. The price and term are the sticking points. I guess all we can do is wait and see

What do you define as long term, and why not?
We're at the bottom of the cap now, the cap is likely to climb to 80-90 million four years from now, so what's the danger?
If you're saying 5 and 6 year deals, I agree with you.

So much for getting bigger?
For the record, I really like Russell.
I guess we really need to see the entire body of work that Burke does between now and the begnining of October.
But so far, the Flames post Fletcher tradition of small players continues.

Three years at three million a season is right where it should be. Really glad in any case they're resigning him.

Burke is showing intellectual honesty and realizing that getting mid round picks for Stajan/Russell and perhaps Stempniak isn't going to help the rebuild. Rather dealing players with term (Hudler, Wideman and perhaps Backlund/Brodie) will bring back the pieces needed for the rebuild. Still think Cammy and Butler will go but not a fait a complit that none of the other ufas aren't re-signed.

- Pending the terms, I do like the initiative to re-sign Russell. He and Gio have been our top 2 defensemen to date. He's small in size but doesn't get run over, is intelligent with the puck, and is coming into his game. Very much worth a measured gamble.
- I don't understand the complaints from some saying he's received sheltered minutes. We're a bottom 3 hockey club, which means that basically all of our defensemen are under siege at all times.
- Also don't get the complaints saying that he wouldn't be a top 4 D on other teams. That's unfortunately the plight of a bottom 3 hockey club.
