Definitely, not half as bad as that, and I disagreed with that fine too. If Tortorella's antics didn't turn it into a media frenzy nothing would have happened.
Maybe that was his plan all along? Drag the spotlight over so Hartley gets fined

Not to the point of supplementary discipline, or at least not in any cases that I remember. They didn't want more than one fight going on, players got booted, fine, end of story. But when has a team and/or coach been punished in the past for this?

Hartley went with his gut that the turd Torts would take the bait.
Torts could have very easily flipped the script on Hartley and had his 1st line go out and try to get an early goal and put the the visiting Flames in a bad early situation.
Many coaches would not so easily fallen for that laid trap.
As for Burkes comment it was well said.
Hartley out coached Torts.

should have ended the whole thing by smirking, yelling Truculance snapped his fingers and said "We're outtie"

He liked to mess with Sather's head and tick him off by delaying as long as possible before giving a starting lineup, and who does he start? Up front: Tim Hunter, Neil Sheehy, Nick Fotiu. That's the starting three forwards, and I think we had Terry Johnson and Charlie Bourgeois on defence, our five toughest by far guys.
So from the story I hear when they handed that over to Sather, Sather went ballistic when he saw because he delayed giving it to him. So Sather got it and went ballistic. Of course, he starts all his toughest guys, and what do they do? They dance right away. But that kind of stuff, can you imagine a coach doing that now? You'd be suspended."

The game I remember was in Calgary because I saw it live. The brawl did not start right away, Fotiu and Hunter changed then the fights happened. Hunter v McSorley, Otto v Semenko, Peplinski v Lowe (I think). Crazy game, think Flames won by a touchdown, think Sather got ejected. Pandemonium in the dome.

Odd, sportsnet said it was just for games after the Flames game tonight.
Edit: That quote says "Prior to, during, or after games" but doesn't mention stuff like practices or off days

While trying to find the official NHL rules on Coaches suspension I came across this:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26336
Quote:
46.20 Fines and Suspensions – Fighting Other Than During the Periods of the Game - Any teams whose players become involved in an altercation, other than during the periods of the game, shall be fined automatically twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) in addition to any other appropriate penalties that may be imposed upon the participating players by supplementary discipline or otherwise.
Any player who would be deemed to be an instigator pursuant to this ruleat a time other than during the periods of the game shall be suspended automatically for ten (10) games. Such determination may be made by the Referee at the time of the incident or subsequently by the Commissioner or his designee based upon such reports and other information as he deems sufficient, including but not limited to television tapes.

Fine matches the amount Hartley got. I wonder if that's the rule we got dinged under.

By listening to what people have said since the incident. I don't mean here, I mean in general. It was a clear cut case but there was a constant effort to place Hartley in the same discussion.

Ya makes sense . Could it be when Hartley poked his head around the corner to say " Go ###### yorself " ? Or mabey Hartley took the blunt of it for Malarchuk ? It's a stretch I know but maybe he said ya punish me instead He's part of my staff?

Pure gold by Hartley.

So in your scenario, Hartley baited and/or provoked Torts whether through action or inaction. Hartley behaved appropriately. All he did was started the 4th line, which scored last game and can bring energy that game.

So 15 day suspension for Torts. Why isn't it games like players get?
