So, Stajan is the only player on the team signed for 2017-18. Lol

Relax everyone... he'll be traded before the contract expires. I doubt he'll be here for the full duration of his contract, and if he is, I hope its for a good reason.

I'd say it's pretty relaxed. Heart attack trashing would have ensued if Feaster was still GM.

If the Flames are going to be selling off most veterans over the next 2 seasons and will be bringing in younger players, thye'll need a solid veteran presense for that period. I didn't think Stajan would be that guy since he doesn't even wear a letter, but apparently the team thinks highly of him.

Most of the players I listed are "solid veteran presences"
Sure, they might cost a bit more, but many of them have also shown much more than Stajan has.
For the record, i'm not going to bag on Stajan for the next 4 seasons. I just don't think he's trade bait in any scenario. He's still on the roster as a result of a panic trade and he's no game breaker.

Stajan could be a desirable commodity in two years at the deadline if he lives up to his contract. Pretty sure this is the strategy Burke has, considering he'll be 32 by then and we'll have others pushing immensely for his spot.

If you think Burke (or by proxy the next GM) will keep Stajan around if he's pushed down the depth charts--you're nuts lol.
|
Just because I don't like the term doesn't mean I want to rush prospects...
Burke said he wants players and picks back in trades. I can see a future trade where a centre comes back.
I just would rather see Backlund in a Flames jersey than Stajan in 3years time.
Monahan, Backlund and Stajan are all here which solidifies our center depth. But if one is to move now I see it being Backlund. He is much more movable than Stajan and we all know Monahan isn't going anywhere.
I know that just because Stajan signed doesn't mean Backlund will be moved but it kinda feels eventually it will end up that way.
I hope I'm wrong. I guess push comes to shove you could trade Stajan away in a couple years...
One positive about the signing is there is no NMC/NTC included.

I like this signing. Who do you think the Flames could realistically sign for around 3.1 million this offseason that is better than Matt Stajan?
Just curious but why do people care about money so much anyways? We are barely going to make the cap floor next year. Are we really going to be hurting because we have 4% of our cap tied up in one player for the next 4 years?
We're not handing out Gagner type money to Stajan (and I'd take Stajan over Gagner as a player anyways) so I don't see why some people are so upset over this.

I don't, that's why I'm wondering why Stajan's money can't be added to an offer on an upgrade.

|
Is there any guarantee they would sign here? I don't know that those guys are a big upgrade on Stajan, and with Stajan, you actually know what you are getting.
Like has been said by many here, you can't roll a centre ice group of all rookies and young players.
As long as there isn't a NMC/NTC, this contract is fine.

I keep going back and forth on this.
I can see the need to protect and shelter the young kids from the top 2 lines from opposing teams and having Stajan lets you do that, but I wasn't expecting him to be back at all.
But giving him 3.125 for 4(!!!) years seems just crazy.
Like some, I feel he doesn't do anything well IMO. He had a bit of resurgence last year and was ok this year, but I didn't think that warranted the term or cap hit.
My 2 cents.

You're forgetting one thing, Stajan wants to be a member of the Flames. You cant just throw money at the other players and guarantee they want to play in Calgary. Now you can try and get one of the others and trade Stajan in the offseason.

I was hoping the Flames and Stajan would part ways. Dollar wise it's fine but not sure why he got 4 years. Maybe the Flames needed to add another year to avoid giving him a NTC. I guess he is the type of player you expect on rebuilding teams...

He kind of has a point though, you can't roll into next season with Backlund as your most veteran center. I'm waiting to see the term and cap number before passing judgment. Something tells me this is going to be a short term deal with a 'we need to hit the cap floor' kind of price tag. CP meltdown ensues.
|
Francis always takes the contrary view (typically in a blasphemous tone)... because it gets attention, leads to web hits, twitter followers and money in his pocket.
If this was 1987 and the Flames traded a bag of pucks to the Penguins for Mario Lemieux, he'd be the one guy saying it wasn't a good deal.

Sure, and the patience ideal works both ways. I don't hate Stajan either, but this move is not part of Burke's standard m.o.
I think a lot of the "calm" has to do with the fact that it's not Feaster though. A lot of people are going to want Burke gone by the time he's done, imo.

The rebuild will be much further along in 2 years, with possibly better options available so still don't understand the term.

How much do you guys think it cost the Flames to not give Stajan a NMC/NTC for this deal? How much money does a player leave on the table in order to get one? Just curious.
