If true, stupid. 3 years is tolerable.
Could be 8 years of Matt Stajan in the lineup if he plays out this entire contract. Bleh.

Good signing IMO. By the 4th year he will be a 4th line Center, but the cap by then will also be 90 million, 3.125 is a drop in the bucket in 4 years.

Works out to 4.4 per cent of the upper limit for next year, and less as time goes by. Probably a lot less than he'd have got on the open market.
Gives Burke/insert-GM-here a lot of options for the future. Very affordable if he stays around, very tradeable if it comes to that.

1-3 years too many IMO.
Stajan is mediocre. If he isn't passed by Monahan, Backlund, 2014 1st, 2015 1st, Granlund we're doing something wrong. So he's our 3rd line centre? Competing with guys like Knight, Colborne, etc? How will he not be redundant in 2 years?

Would have preferred two or three years myself, but the only real problem here is dealing with people who can't get over bitterness from the Phaneuf trade and take the flaws Stajan does have and magnify them to an embarrassing degree.

3 years would have been my preference but oh well. Hope there are no clauses involved.

overall this is probably not going to be a bad signing. The money is good, would of been happier with two or three years though

He's making 3.25 million.. easily trade-able if needed and lets be honest... Colborne and Knight will be lucky to get to Stajan's current level.

My god.
Who the F wants to see Matt Stajan in a Flames jersey for another 4 years.

2 years would have been perfect. 3 years is what I figured. 4, clearly Stajan got the term he wanted. Dollars are good. As long as he doesn't have a restrictive NTC, it's pretty manigable with options on what to do with him 2 years from now if he no longer fits the picture as well as he does now.

Dont mind keeping Stajan, but this seems a little steep to me.
Thought it could have been kept to under 3 million and 3 years or less

Ugh.
You can sign or trade for guys like Stajan without much issue. You could go get Weiss from Detroit for almost free. Why keep the mediocre player you know, just because you know him.
Next up I guess is signing Butler, Stempniak and Cammalleri. Who needs to get picks/prospects for the rebuild when we can keep this awesome team together.

Gross. 4 years! 4 freakin' years! I don't really care about the $$ (it's more then he's worth though) we need to make the floor so evs... but the term is really bad.
Crazy. The first non-ELC contract of the Burke era is naturally a stinker.

Not happy with the term or money.
He's a third or fourth line centre, you don't pay them $3.125M. Certainly not for 4 years.

Weiss just got a 5 year 24.5 million contract with a modified NTC. So evidently it fairly costly to have a guy like him.

Yes, signing of Stajan means the rebuild is out the window. Hit panic button now, all other UFA's will be re-signed, because Burke secretely loves this team he claims to loath so much.

why this is good? Not letting assets walk away for nothing, by signing him we will retain his value. 3 years? In 3 years of NHL there is guaranteed to be an NHL team that loses 2 of its top 3 centres to injury, and when that happens... MATTT STAJJJANN

Haha! Calgary sucks so bad now that we have to overpay Stajan to stay. I'd have expected 2.5. Seriously, he would be KHL bound next year if the Flames don't sign him. He is worth more than nothing (i.e. letting him walk) but no team in the NHL wants him, so why so much money and term?
He is still cheaper and better than D Jones.
And as long as there is no NMC goofiness I can live with it.
