That's what I read as well. Katz basically tried to pull the noose from Lowe's neck and wrap it around MacTavish's.

The good news: Lowe and MacTavish are safe, will of the people who pay for that product be damned. This should mean a lot more hilarity if the Oilers get off to yet another slow-start next year.

I find it tough to believe that a guy with that tan lives in Edmonton.

Yeah but just because the post- Ryan Smith rebuild failed I don't think you can completely discount those 2/3 seasons from their history of suckage.

For the Flames you probably could say that phase one of our rebuild started on January 31st 2010 when we traded Dion Phaneuf and Olli Jokinen in a 48 hour time period.

It didn't work but that would technically still be Phase One of the Flames Rebuild (Jan. 31st 2010 to March 28th 2013). The major difference being the Flames never drafted top 10 during that time frame, while as Oling mentioned the Oilers did multiple times including 3 picks in 2007.

Similar to the Oilers in that it took us 3 seasons of tinkering before we really started to blow it up.

He doesn't. He lives in Vancouver. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even see that "letter" until it was posted ... if he has at all. Oiler fans thought he was the savior, but he's a straight villain and it's hilarious.

Prebuild!

Awesome... I am going to be using that on a daily basis!

Was the letter addressed to Tier 1 Oiler fans or Tier 2?

Oh Daryl. You had me at "We all thought this was going to be the year the Oilers turned the corner. Obviously, that hasn’t happened... and it hurts."

I like how it's reached the point where the start date is being adjusted to lessen the blow. I anxiously await the next letter released when the Oilers no longer draft 1st overall and it's spun as a "positive new direction" for the rebuild.

Wow. You know your team is in rough shape when the owner has to write a letter to the fans.

I love that Katz handed Lowe a 'Get Out Of Jail Free' card by chaining MacT's neck to a concrete anchor.

I have an idea, if you're worried about your fans being upset heres a few ideas:

- Skip the next few absurd Season-Ticket price hikes
- Refrain from insulting fans via an eclectic backroom 'Tier1/2' classification system
- Request that your General Manager stop yelling at them in the stands
- Discontinue policy of banning fans who express themselves
- Decommission 'Gimp-Room'
- Remove ball-peen hammer from KLowe's locker
- Release ludicrously incompetent PR firm if, in fact, it isnt just Lowe's mother
- Dial 'The Suck' down to a more reasonable '11' or so

Well that letter might not be well received in Oiler land, I would expect that the Oilers PR firm is going to flood the internet with positive messages, pictures of cats petting dogs, and soft elevator music versions of Queen's we are the champions.

But this letter from Katz was exactly what I expected from Katz since he's a fan boy with denial syndrome.

We're in four years of rebuilding. WE have accountability except for my special friend Kevin who like a Vipa is so so awesome and on team Canada But this is Mac-T's team so be upset with him that this team is so terrible.

This is such a generic letter and most of it came from fans on Oiler boards that were trying to defend Lowe and Eakins and Mac-T so its not all that creative its plagiarized.

If I was an Oiler fan I would look at it as not only a Lowe is awesome letter but its none of his fault.

I would cancel my seasons tickets 10 minutes into reading it

No it wasn't. Phaneuf was 24, Stajan, StempniakHagman and White were all older. Unless every trade can be classified as rebuilding rarely do they involve giving up the youngest and best player in the deal.

Trading a future HHOF fame defenseman in the later part of his prime for 2 first round picks, a 2nd round pick, a 20 year old defenseman and a 23 year old winger is a rebuilding move. Regardless of circumstance.

Trading a long time veteran and heart and soul player for a 1st round draft pick and 2 former first round draft picks aged 21 and 20 is a rebuilding move.

Trading a long time team captain (and Lupul just to show how incompetent they are) for a younger defenseman and draft pick while changing the leadership of the team is a rebuilding move.

Doing all 3 of those moves in a single year means it's a rebuild. The Oilers started rebuilding in 2006.

What a dummy you are.

Don't you know it's a rebuild when you jettison your young talent and keep your old talent that has been there for a decade?

Trading Pronger for 5 assets was the start of the (p)re-build. Look through the history of the NHL, and a trade like that will always signal the start of a re-build. The fact that they were incompetent in their rebuild does not mean that it didn't start at that point.

For the most part agree but think rebuild is a vauge definition. I use the definition more loosely and don't think it means just intentionally sucking and getting first overall picks.

To me a rebuild is when there is a major directional shift in the organization.

I think the Phaneuf/Jokinen trade is a decent starting point for a 3 year shift in the Flames direction that didn't work out. Sutter was ousted less than a year later, Langkow/Regehr moved within the next 18 months, and the core of the team was mainly different outside of Iggy/Kipper.

I guess many would call it a re-tool due to the lack of top draft picks and since we didn't trade any veterans for players/prospects.

By any definition it was a change in organizational direction that failed. Much more arguable than the Oilers trying to defend their rebuild though. That team has had multiple top 10 picks and had traded veterans for picks and prospects as far back as the 06/07 season, clearly a rebuild by any definition.
