Burke said he needed to think about what his untouchables were, but admitted there were some, albeit few.
Who are your Flames untouchables and/or Burkes? I say we limit the answers to players on professional contracts. (NTC/NMC are not a factor in the decision)
For me:
Monahan - no brainer
Brodie - best young d
Gio - team leader
Baertschi - too early to give up on
There are players like Russell, Backlund, Bouma, Colborne and Hudler who I think are only going to be moved in the right deal but I still think they can be had.
What do you think?
(Save the Sven hate for another thread plz - I know he is struggling and everyone is frustrated but I've heard enough! Its fine if you don't think he is untouchable but I don't want this discussion to centralize around his struggles and everyones opinion on it)
Sorry if there is already a thread like this, given Burkes comments lately it got me thinking...
Monahan and Giordano IMO should be the only untouchables. I believe the team needs Gio for leadership and the fact that he can play. Every other player can be in play although some like Gaudreau should be traded only if the return is too good to refuse.
I dont think ANY of our players are untouchable, thats ludicrous. And that is they way it should be.
Your telling me if MacKinnon was offered for Monahan it wouldnt get done?? It would never happen but never say never. All about what you get in return.
Im not convinced Burke believes we have the right core to build around or lets say we have very few pieces. This and next years draft will play a huge role in that!

I assume that with this scenario the unrealistic deals are just ignored.
Of course if Pittsburgh offers us Crosby and Malkin then I move anything but that isn't happening.
If Colorado wants to make a stupid deal like Monahan for MacKinnon then sure I would do that but it makes zero sense and basically means that no player in the NHL is untouchable.

I have a prefered list of players I believe should be untouchable but that's irrelevant as Burke has stated that Monahan and the draft picks are untouchable. Which is alright with me as he is going to explore every angle of every possible deal to get the best outcome for the return.
My example was a heck of allot more realistic than what you proposed. point is regardless of your rate of return, there are no untouchables. The better question to ask is who do you want to build your team around?

As Moon stated it is pretty obvious teams will not be offering MacKinnon, Tavares, Stamkos for Monahan so it is safe to say he is untouchable (certainly wouldn't move him for a Kane, Kadri, or O'Rielly)
I would say Monahan, future 1sts, and Gio are the only true untouchables.

While I agree there are no untouchables, there should be a list of 'you're gonna have to severely overpay'.
Yes to the usual suspects, but I'd add Bouma to that list. Guys like him are not that easy to replace. Although not exactly the same player, but how much could we use Prust on this team?

when i was younger i felt there were 'untouchables' that would never get traded.... then the oilers dealt greztky and my idea of untouchables went out the window

Would you trade anyone on this team for a first overall, lets say McDavid next year. so giving up Mono and your first pick.
There is no one on this team I wouldnt trade for a potential franchise player, I dont think Monahan is that individual. luv the pick and having a great first year, but he isnt in the same class as the hockey players mentioned in this thread. thats just MHO.

I am not sure it is that much more realistic as I would put both chances at 0% likelihood of happening.
But I guess this can mean different things to different folks.
I can't see anything realistic that gets me to trade Monahan or one of the picks.
For Gio I could see the Oilers offering their 1st this year (might not be likely but possible) and I would do that deal.
To me that is why Monahan is untouchable and Gio not. But I would probably look to build around both those guys (and others) going forward.
In a world of realistic trades, only Monahan and our #1 in 2015 should be untouchable.
