Or to show us it wasn't a fleecing.

Yeah, same or less is my guess. He is not in demand. Would get Mason Raymonded in the off season.

I'm ok with 2x4m at most. 2 years is enough.

That's fair, I've seen how underrated he is in your eyes and how grating you can be so we'll leave it at that.
Colborne is a poor option for any center position, if he sticks in the NHL it'll be at the wing.

Very different from Raymond. There is no doubt he'd be signed in the off-season as an experienced center. Guys you can reliably play on the third line for value contracts are in demand around the league.

Could be. I am hoping for more of a discount, but $3.5 million now doesn't buy what it did back when we originally re-signed him. Plus, this team is going to handing out some juicy contracts due to being to low on the cap going into next season. Stajan may benefit from that.
I guess if you have to overpay a few players for cap floor reason, it might as well be one that is well liked among his team.

I think signing Stajan is the lesser of 3 evils.
1. Keep Stajan as our veteran centre. He's a good lockeroom guy and can step into a top 6 role when needed. He is good defensively. The coach uses him appropriately and he doesn't look out of place. Hopefully he doesn't get more then the 3.5 mil he already makes, but at this stage we're going to need to get above the floor. I care more about the term then I do his cap hit.
2. Trade Stajan, then overpay for a UFA in the offseason to replace him. Have no idea how the new guy will fit it, and term/cap hit will cause CP to lose it. The term/cap hit for a free agent centreman is going to be high.
3. Trade Stajan and toss Backlund, Colborne, Knight, Monahan etc to the wolves and watch them get destroyed every night. Backlund has taken steps forward this season, but I don't think he's ready for a full-time role on the top unit. We have no one who is ready to lead the top line and be productive each and every night. Right now, we have a rotation of whomever is playing best and that's fine until someone steps up.
This signing if true isn't as bad as it's being made out to be. We NEED vets on the team, and more importantly a veteran centreman. Othewise Backlund becomes our #1 guy and he's just not ready for that role yet. Stajan is a hard worker and leads by example. We need players like that on this team right now. This signing I think is much more about retaining a guy who sets a good example, then it is having him around to win us games.

I am ok with this.
1. He is a center
2. He actually wants to be here. Some people underestimate this point.
3. He has proven to be a decent player especially after Hartley coming on.
4. We need SOMEONE to play next year.
Burke probably looked at the trade market and found our that no one is willing to give up more than a 3rd or 4th for him, hence the next best thing is to keep him and have him help out during the re-build.

No, he wouldn't. Stajan is a decent option down the middle, decent two-way game and can get some points on a decent streak. He's a lot more valuable then a one-way winger.

Stajan gives every shift his all. He is a not a punishing center but he doesn't hurt you either. I like the idea that calgary is keeping around a vet that doesn't take a night off.
Anyone who thinks Reinhart or Knight would be better off centering the third line or a shut down line have obviously not watched a single Heat game all year. Knight is in the AHL because his defensive game needs work and Reinhart floats.

I just hope this signing does not push Backlund out of town.

@RogMillions: If @friedgeHNIC is correct and he usually is...it explains Stajan's Agent Pat Morris smile last week in YYC. Interesting development.

I'm not against this, but I not really for it either. Hopefully it's a two year extension. He is the best option we have to play against other team's top lines at the moment so keeping him isn't a terrible thing

I think Stajan has been picked to be that vet presence going forward. He is really liked and respected in the room. Probably will see Stempniak and Cammalleri traded this deadline.
For this to be beneficial at all there can not be a NTC.

We need some veterans here.
I would not be surprised to see Stempniak stay too.
Cammy will get traded, I think.
I hope they trade Galiardi as well.

Stajan is a centre we can lose with, so as long as it's a short term deal (2 years), I'm fine with it. He's not part of the end-game, but can be part of the solution as we continue to lose hard for at least another year if not more.
I imagine an extension for him may mean Backlund is being leveraged in a separate trade to help address issues that Burke wants to deal with. As stated, Burke wants to get bigger - and having Backlund and Stajan seems moot if he's looking to actually accomplish that in the short term as neither brings any sort of physical edge to their game.

If we're keeping Stajan just so we can trade Backlund for a 2nd, it's a brutal mistake.

I am a little surprised given Burke didn't seem like a big fan in Toronto as I recall one of the reasons he traded him to Calgary is that Burke and his agent couldn't see eye to eye on Stajan's value with him due to become a free agent at the end of that season.
