Has Stajan "earned" a contract extension given how brutal he's be playing for over a month (well before the Backes knee)?

Good lord. You need to calm yourself.
We need to shelter young centers like Monahan and S.Reinhart/Bennett for their first few years in the league. To do this, you need veteran centers like Stajan, and to an extent, Backlund.

I don't really mind Stajan if he's playing like he has been the last 18 months. I just never thought in a million years that he'd be one of the guys re-signed.

A week ago he was finally on the 4th line where he belonged.
This guy has proven himself to be NOT a winner. I don't want guys who are perennial losers to be mentoring my young players.
|
You should give Burkie a call and tell him your rock solid plan on how you are going to get winners like Sidney Crosby and Towes over here to mentor our young players.

I think that was 99% of the problem, his contract raised high expectations and he fell short every year. This in turn destroys his confidence and he plays like total crap. He was basically put on the first line and said now produce, we expect instant chemistry with Jarome!
I can also see it being hard to trade Stajan right now as you will never get full value, they bought high on him and it would really hurt to sell low.
As long as the term/value is reasonable, I have no problem with keeping Stajan around. I am hoping two years 2ish mill.
edit: LoL careful when googling Matt Stajan extension, I just got a press release from his last contract and just about smashed my laptop against the wall. Check the date!

Centres are hard to find and he's not going to have a NTC or NMC on his contract. Not like he can't be traded in the future.

He's probably only worth a 3rd rounder + marginal prospect on the trade market. If that's the return, I think we're better off keeping him another couple years.

I'd say Stajan absolutely has proven he's probably our best option to take one of 4 starting center spots on this team. He's not being pushed out by any young players on our team, and as mentioned earlier, we don't have the assets to aquire something different or the appeal to UFAs for an upgrade.........................so, yes, I guess he has.
All this signing means is Stajan will be on this team for the next little while until someone from the organization makes him un-necissary.

I like the signing as long as it is 3 years or less.
He is willing to do anything asked by the coaching staff. He plays with emotion and he never quits. By all accounts he is extremely popular in the room and great with the young players. This is exactly who you want around the team during a rebuild.

If you are just going to go out and look for roster filler, might as well keep the ones you have. He plays fine now and is worth his current salary.
Supports my suspicion that you can't get anything for him.
No point trading him for a 3rd. That would be stupid.

I don't mind the deal. Still need veteran centres on the team. If you're not going to get enough for him on the trade market, better to keep him around.

I find it funny that people ran Tanguay out of town for "pouting", yet Stajan was terrible and pouting for all 3 years under Brent.

2 years or less and I'm alright with it. Not happy with it but can deal with it.
Need some veterans to help the young guys in the rebuild, and Stajan has been a good center that can shoulder the tough minutes if needed.
