Not absolving the goalies of any fault, but that fanbase is absolutely brutal with their goalies, constantly blaming them.

You just hope he can continue playing like this. He had 1 good year in Columbus and was mediocre until this year.

The Flyers once again stuck with a subpar goalie for the next 4 years, it seems they will never figure it out in the crease.

			I think that's a good signing. 3 years isn't very long, he's young, and $4 million isn't a big deal.

Yup. Sub .900 SV% in the last 20 games is a bit of an indication of things to come for Mason in Philly. He's a below average goalie in the NHL, with probably only Pavelec being a worse full time starter.

Mason started off strong but has had 3-4 terrible games in December which contributed to the low GAA average you talk about. Even then, he had some terrific games in between, but was inconsistent. However, at 25, and playing fairly well over the course of the season, I think this is a good move by Philly.

Cap hit is small by today's cap standards, and Philly's bankroll. With goalies, I think a good way to assess them is to compare them to their backup.

Compare Crawford with Raanta in Chicago -- pretty similar numbers. Compare Crawford with Emery of last year -- pretty similar numbers. Now compare Emery with Mason this year in Philly.

Sample sizing will definitely be an issue, but Mason has played quite well for Philly. I like it. And it if stinks it up later, Philly can always trade or buy their way out of the situation.

			Mason 2013-14:
 OCT/NOV: 19gms, .934sv%
 DEC/JAN: 17gms, .895sv%

Why are they bothering extending him?

He had a terrible game against Tampa a week ago. if you had done this a week ago the numbers would look better.

Plus he's only 25... the age a lot of goalies are just breaking into the league or getting established.

He's had 9 starts since Dec 1st of below .900SV%, it's not just one bad game, it's more than every 2nd game.

The fact he is 25 is a good point though, but it's been shown as well that the assumption that goalies get better with age is for the most part false, saw a good graphic on twitter the other day showing how Hiller has had the exact same SV% throughout his career. So far Mason has shown that for the majority of his career he's had bad numbers. Started strong in Columbus, started strong in Philly, but then in both cases fell back to poor numbers for a starting goalie.

Mason has done a good job resurrecting his career this season but the knock on him in the past has been his attitude and refusal to really work on his game.
Now that he's gotten the contract, you have to wonder if he'll revert back to his terrible ways. He seems like a prime candidate for regression especially considering his stats aren't that impressive anyway.
