Draisaitl 1A even in a 3-1 loss to the Blades
dal Colle 1A +2 in a 5-2 win over the Attack

Ekblad didn't even have to play and he still had the best night out of all of them!

Watched Draisaitl again tonight and still not a fan.

Has good size and decent skill like Kopitar but the comparisons end right there. He doesn't think the game at a fast enough pace and his decision making is suspect. Does well at the junior level when he has three seconds to make a play, but that won't fly when he has half a second in the NHL.

He would've been a later 1st in last years draft and really doesn't look like a blue-chip top line guy which is what you'd expect from a top-5 pick.

Hope the Flames pass on this guy.

Reinhart's goal tonight was beautiful. Can someone get a gif of it?

I am hoping for Reinhart, Bennett and Dal Colle in that order when it comes time to draft.

Draisaitl clearly had the best night, his team improved their draft position.

It absolutely is.

Look at the Avalanche. Ryan O'Reily, drafted as a center, easily moved to the wing. Nathan MacKinnon, drafted as a center, easily moved to the wing.

You can never have enough depth down the middle, if you have it, move those guys to the wing. I hate to sound like a broken record but it's nearly impossible to shift a wing to the middle post-draft, it's just too steep a learning curve.

I would love for the Flames to come out of this summer with Monahan and Reinhart down the middle. It puts a lot less pressure on other centers to develop and hey if Jankowski does pan out, no problem, shift someone to wing. Monahan, Reinhart, Backlund as your 1-2-3 is a superb support beam for your rebuild.

Those three centers would be the Flames load bearing wall for our rebuild, wingers are shelves.

I think you misread my post a bit. I'm not against drafting two centers (I'm actually all for drafting more centers), I was just saying I wish we could get a player who brought something more visibly different than what Monahan brings. I feel like Reinhart will be fairly close to what Monahan will be...a steady, smart, all-around solid center, but perhaps not that hyper-skilled, game-breaking type that you'd want your ideal #1 to be. Your Colorado example is exactly the situation that I'd prefer, as MacKinnon is that fast game-breaker 1st line center, and brings something completely different than what O'Reilly does.

But like I also said, you rarely get the chance to pick your perfect ideal player, so you draft who you think is the best at that time. Reinhart would still be a very solid choice.

We are not in a position to pick and choose who we draft. We need to take the best player, and continue on with that. If you end up with a log jam up the middle so be it, now you have young assests that are coveted by every single team and able to use that to probably fleece a team and fill some holes.

My preference is for Ekblad. I go by the tradition that you build from the goal out, which means defence next but either of the other two, Reinhart or Bennett is fine as I don't take the ideologue thing to extremes.

If Edmonton is picking ahead of us they pick Ekblad. Reinhart, Bennett, Draisitl or Dal Colle would be good constellation prizes if Ekblad is selected before we pick. Ekblad IMO should be the pick the team makes.

I'm in the Ekblad camp. It seems more and more difficult to get the big #1 stud defenseman these days and it's something the Flames really need.

At least the Flames have Monahan, Sven, Johnny G, Klimchuk, and Poirier up front. All of these guys have 2nd line potential and even 1st line for some.

Who do the Flames have in the cupboard on D? Maybe Seiloff and Wotherspoon have 3/4 potential? I guess Brodie is a solid 3 guy.

The Flames will be in great shape with either Reinhart or Ekblad, but I prefer the latter.

I assume that Buffalo would choose Renihart if they attained the 1st overall pick.
With Myers, Zadorov, Ristolainen, and Pysyk on the backend and lack of forward prospects, it makes the most sense.

Therefore, the Flames need to finish 29th overall to get Ekblad.

You gotta go with BPA in my opinion.

If BPA is too close to call, then your first priority should be to take the CENTER. Especially high up in the draft. Elite centers are hard to find anywhere else in the draft but very, very early. And IMO elite centers are the most important part of building an elite team.

Just looking at the scoring stats this season, the top listed centers are:

1. Crosby - 1st overall
2. Tavares - 1st overall
3. Getzlaf - 19th overall
4. Thornton - 1st overall
5. Toews - 3rd overall
6. Backstrom - 4th overall
7. Malkin - 2nd overall
8. Seguin - 2nd overall
9. Giroux - 22nd overall
10. Benn - 129th overall
11. Duchene - 3rd overall
12. Sedin - 3rd overall
13. Kopitar - 11th overall
14. Krejci - 43rd overall
15. Turris - 3rd overall
16. Johansen - 4th overall
17. N-Hopkins - 1st overall

...and not far behind are the likes of Couture (9th overall), E. Staal (2nd overall) and M. Koivu (6th overall).

2/17 on that list taken outside of the first round
12/17 taken in the top 5 of their drafts.

Now for a look at the top scoring defensemen this year:

1. Karlsson - 15th overall
2. Keith - 54th overall
3. Byfuglien - 245th overall
4. Subban - 43rd overall
5. Weber - 49th overall
6. Pietrangelo - 4th overall
7. Seabrook - 14th overall
8. Shattenkirk - 14th overall
9. Yandle - 105th overall
10. Suter - 7th overall
11. Kronwall - 29th overall
12. Bouwmeester - 3rd overall
13. Fowler - 12th overall
14. Wisniewski - 156th overall
15. Hedman - 2nd overall
16. McDonagh - 12th overall
17. E-Larsson - 6th overall
18. Garrison - UNDRAFTED
19. Zidlicky - 176th overall
20. Doughty - 2nd overall

8/20 taken out side the first round, including one who was never even drafted
4/20 taken in the top 5 of their draft

I like Ekblad. Big, talented, etc, etc.

But IMO, we should be picking centers with our high picks until we have so many of them becoming elite NHLers that they are spilling onto our wings.

I admit, scoring stats are the first thing I look at when evaluating a player but stats don't tell the whole story, especially for defencemen. There is a lot to say for non scoring defencemen as well as scoring defencemen, at least as compared to forwards, so when you find a big defenceman good at both defence and offence, you have someone special.

Scoring doesn't tell it all, but draft history sort of tells enough about the pitfalls. There's like three D men in the league who went top 5 and are worth it. The rest just aren't, and a high ratio of the highly picked D are disappointments.

I agree with going center.

If we get a 1st for Cammalleri, I think we should package it with our 2nd to try to move up to a 15 or 16 position with it.

I really like Roland McKeown. I don't understand why he's not in the top 10 in most of the rankings I see. If we can get him at 16, I think it'd be a steal. He reminds me of Drew Doughty in many ways. He quarterbacks a powerplay, and I think is the 2nd best defencemen in the draft after Ekblad.
