They found a cat nearby, same thing. I feel bad for the city worker - found the dog, then the cat.
Poor animals. Geeze, so many people would be willing to help find the dog a home if the owners weren't able to keep it. Hell, I absolutely would have helped, gladly. Same with the cat.

Made the mistake of opening these pictures at school today and somebody walking by took offense having read the story earlier in the day, I reckon. As badly as I want people throw in jail for doing this kind of stuff to dogs, I guess our priority should be getting punishment for human murder in line with what it should be.

Well, there are differing thoughts on that, personally I think our system works pretty good. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. But that's a whole other thread.
How it affects this though, is important. Often those that torture or kill animals go on to do that to humans. And even if you aren't dealing with a psychopath, and merely someone who is irresponsible and cruel, it could still point to other illegal behaviour.
In short, taking crimes like this more seriously, could help the justice system as a whole, and keep people safer. And it would be a fairly simple start, as opposed to rearranging other more complicated parts of the criminal code.

Brutal - hadn't heard about the cat. Don't recall if I said it already today - but I really hate people sometimes.

Obviously we have somebody with a serious problem roaming the Willowpark area. Hopefully, based on what happened to these animals theres an elevated approach to monitoring by CPS. These aren't a rash of break ins, this is serial killer bull####.

Disgusting. I hope they throw this jerkoff in jail and he gets the same treatment that a child molester would get.

Non-animal lover chiming in here.
Monstrous behavior, i think most of us may have killed ants with a magnifying glass or even snared gophers as kids. But this is graduating to a level that clearly progresses to murder. probably an underaged person responsible and our society needs to do everything it can to get sociopaths psych treatment early. Hope very much they find the kid and get them into treatment.

^^^^^^
As non-animal caring as this sounds, it's kind of a weird how our society just picks and chooses what constitutes animals that matter. And if something happens to animals that matter, the person is a monster and should be locked up forever, but certain other animals are just "Yeah, we've all tortured and killed that animal at certain points in our lives, but this guy tortured and killed that animal. MONSTER!!! PSYCHOPATH!

What are you talking about?
Even for animals that we kill and eat it should be done as humanly as possible, in a way that brings little or no suffering to the cow/pig/etc. Needlessly torturing a cow or pig would be equally as disgusting.

I was referring to handgroen's comment specifically, alluding to how torturing ants and killing gophers is something lots of people have done, but this is "graduating to a level that clearly progresses to murder".
Wasn't trying to make a bold statement or anything, and I totally get why we value bigger and cuter animals, as I'm one of those people, but it's just funny, considering at the end of the day, killing or torturing anything is technically on the same level, regardless of size or cuteness of said animal.

You think the reason someone tortured them is because they just didn't want to take care of them any more?

This is so awful. And scary to think that whoever did this is (likely) roaming willow park unidentified. It's definitely some future serial killer level of torture.
Also, I know for sure not everyone tortures ants and gophers because I never did. It's still a living thing, why cause needless pain?

There was a thread on here years ago that brought this topic up, and it was pretty surprising to see how many people admitted to killing an animal in a not-so-humane way. Nothing to this degree, but it does seem to happen with kids quite often. I don't totally understand it, but my guess is it has something to do with a morbid curiosity.

Which would be a FAARR cry from what we have today.
There currently is a bill at the federal level that would crack down on animal cruelty. As stated in the first link, this bill, in various formats, has been in front of the house for TEN YEARS.
http://openparliament.ca/bills/41-1/C-414/
http://openparliament.ca/bills/41-2/C-232/
http://openparliament.ca/bills/41-2/C-274/
Who are the most vocal opponents of these bills? Why is there such foot-dragging? Animal agri-business. Agri-business lobbiests are demanding complete exemptions from any animal cruelty bills. Hunter groups are also active in promoting the status quo.
Not much has changed during those 10 years, except the party in power:
http://www.producer.com/2002/03/rura...-cruelty-bill/
So long as we are willing to close our eyes to the suffering that benefits us, it will be difficult to increase penalties against dog/cat torturers.
