Saskatchewan school officials are backtracking on a decision to ban a First Nations student from wearing an Aboriginal land rights hoodie to school.

Tenelle Starr, 13, told CBC News that teachers asked her not to wear the sweatshirt to school because other students were uncomfortable with its message. The hoodie read “Got land?” on the front and “Thank an Indian” on the back.

“They told me to remove my sweater because it was offending other people,” the eighth grader at Balcarres Community School, which is about 90 km outside of Regina, told CBC.

I think this kind of expression is a good one. There are legitamate land claims made under treaties 6,7,8 that have not been fufilled. Canada swindled natives our of their land and now we don't even want to give them what little we promised.

And given by the typical reaction here more education is needed on what Canada actually agreed to in exchange for the land.

I think that's a great example of satire expressing a real issue. IMO, they should talk about it in social studies not ban it.

This is the way it should be done.

Have a discussion about it, have a debate about it, get the students to research all of the issues on it and talk about it.

That's what protest is supposed to do.

I agree with your post.

The issue I have is that this hoodie, was most likely puchased by an adult or at least consent to her wearing it was given by an adult. This does nothing help heal the issues with Native Communities, in fact I would suggest it only makes them worse. If the aim is truely to move towards reconcilliation and forgiveness this is not helpful.
