My husband tends to deal with the phone purchases so I've been pretty much out of the loop when it comes to the details, but it's my iPhone that has started to die here, so I've taken the reigns to find a good replacement that isn't iPhone. Maybe we can get a similar deal without locking into a contract somewhere? If we can, that'd be great.
I could be wrong, but I thought that I had heard/read somewhere that your current "plan" can be continued on a month-to-month basis, even if your contact is complete. I'm hoping that it is true as I also have a 6 gig plan through Fido, but my next phone will likely be unlocked sans contract. Or in other words, the contact is to keep you around long enough to pay off your phone, but your actual plan is separate.

Edit: I figured I'd do the chat thingy on the Fido web site to answer my own question as I was also curious. I assume that the Rogers policies are similar as they're the same company. The good news is:

11:56 AM Annie: Once your agreement will be over, your plan will continue on a month to month basis. You will be able to keep the same plan.
11:57 AM Annie: We offer a 10% discount on Standard plans when you have your own device.

Also, I do remember previously asking what would happen if I had a new, unlocked phone while still under contact/agreement. The answer was, basically, nothing. You'd continue to pay your contact, you'd just have a different phone. So if your iPhone dies before your contact is up, just buy a Nexus and pop in the sim and you're golden. Nothing would change on the billing side.

Well the universe is almost trying to get me to get a Nexus. Right after writing the above two posts, I embarked on my lunchtime walk. While on the pedestrian bridge over Crowchild, I whipped my phone out of my pocket after feeling a buzz and caught the edge of the pocket. Phone hits the pavement of the bridge, bounces, and then hits the lower part of the railing which saves it from certain death. And then I get back to my office and it shuts down with the battery at 50%, which it has been doing lately, especially if a little cold.

Apparently I have two Nexus 5s now. I bought one for myself over Christmas. Sure enough, come New Year, my company offers me a Nexus for work too. Plus I now get data through work. So I'll probably end up selling my personal N5, and downgrade my own plan and run data on my work phone. Yay for free data!

I recommend you activate a Google Play music account rather than getting an app to transfer all your music. You can fairly easily get around the restrictions on us Canadians. All you need is a Chrome extension called Hola or ProxMate and you can have access to it once your Google Play Music account is activated. Though mind you Google play all access is still not available since you need a US credit card to process the payment properly.

Once you've followed the instructions above, you can access your music any location via your browser, phone, etc and only keep the music you want on your device.

I did it because my plan with Rogers was a pretty good plan, they waived the early upgrade fee (I was still on a three year plan) and the Nexus 5 on Boxing day/week was $0 so it was a no brainer for me to grab a Nexus 5 and sign up for another 2 years. I might have thought harder if it was 3 years still, but 2 years and having Google upgrade support for 18 months of that sold me to just get it through Rogers for free.

I don't know where to put this, wish we still had an all incompassing Nexus/Google Play device thread... but the Moto G now has a Google Play edition.

https://play.google.com/store/device...?id=moto_g_8gb

Mind you, that means nothing to us Canadians as we can't get these here.

Not like the Moto G was really far off from stock Android anyways...and wasn't it already getting KitKat soon too?

I just got a Koodo Moto G and unlocked it. Phenomenal phone for the price of $150 (had a friend signing up with Koodo but had a Nexus 5 already so I bought the G off of them. Otherwise $200), snappy with its quad core processor and it really gives the Nexus line a run for it's money price/performance wise. It feels faster than the Nexus 4 and about the same as a Galaxy S3... but for a fraction of the price it's a no brainer. Display is way above average for it's price class though it is a bit on the heavy side and only comes in plain black plastic. No Moto Maker for us in Canada.

Great alternative to the Nexus for a non-power user phone off contract.

Yeah, I just meant it would be nice to be able to buy some of these devices right from Google instead of going through the carriers here. I'd love to get a cheap Moto G just to check it out.

Not sure for the Moto G buying through the Google would have been much better. Assuming it's $179 for a GPE Moto G (same as US though dollar is going down so I'd expect that to change shortly) you'd still pay the regular $20 shipping from Google Play Store so it'd end up being the same price as the carrier one but without the Motorola value added features like always on voice commands, active display and gesture based tech.

Mind you you'd still have to unlock the phone. There was a long thread about how to do it in forums, but rather than trying to figure out I just bought an unlock code online for $3 to save myself the half hour or hour it would have taken me (based on my S2 unlock)

I guess I'm not making myself clear. I want to be able to buy all these other Google Play devices (and there are a plethora available in the States version of GooglePlay) because it eliminated the hoop jumping of getting through a carrier here in Canada.

I'm not on Telus or Koobo, so I can't just easily go get one. I'd love to just order it right from Google, even if I pay more with shipping then going through the Canadian carriers.

The Moto G doesn't have Active Display (Moto X has an AMOLED screen, LCD can't do it) or Always On Voice (requires a specific processor, and the Moto G only has a quad core). So AFAIK it's basically a couple minor tweaks from stock Android like Moto Assist and the Camera app.
