Not nearly as bad of an overpayment, but reminds me of NJ's trade for Schneider.
I don't think this changes much, but I hope they win enough to get out of the bottom 4-5 (impossible, I know) and then Schrivens bolts in the offseason (or signs a 7 year, $42M contract extension).

you watched Oilers games this year, he let in a soft goal a game...it started in the season opener against Winnipeg
this is a good trade...3rd rounders rarely pan out and if they do, it's 3 or 4 years down the road
all we need is average goaltending and he'll be a huge upgrade over Dubnyk
|
No you need outstanding goaltending for your team scrivens isnt going to cut it good luck though

Pretty sure Martin Jones made Scrivens expendable as a backup in LA. It's pretty obvious. LA had an opportunity to simplify their goaltending tandem.

Um, it really is. Mediocre as in relatively average. It may be a tad higher than the .911 save percentage that the other goalies in his range have, but it is a far cry from the < .920 save percentage that the goalies who are genuinely above average regularly post.

Do players give pressers saying how happy they are to join Edmonton?

I trust Deal Lombardi on this one. Last year, he would not trade Bernier in the division, and demanded an apparently outrageous price. He must feel that Scrivens won't be so scary to face.
After everything is said and done, did the Oilers really upgrade much here? Time will tell.

I think the majority of CP would agree that while Dubnyk wasn't spectacular by any stretch, the Oilers defense is atrocious and the main cause for their terrible record. Which made it even more hilarious when they traded away one of their few d-men who actually knew what the word defense meant, so they could sign "Mr. Universe"

Yeah...you see, one of the key elements to building a successful team is to draft well in the lower rounds, like, say, the third round.

No it's not. It was however worse than what Dubnyk put up last season (0.921).

I hope Dubnyk now backstops the Preds into an 8th playoff spot will posting a 1.80 GAA and a .940 SP. That would be awesome!

Except Scrivens is following-up that season by being even better.

Oilers fan know this too...we are well aware the D needs to get better and is the worst in the league, but I'd like to see the team with average goaltending
Oilers actually have a better record without Smid than with him so he isn't missed around here...warrior sure, good guy ya...but expensive and one-dimensional

So what happened to Bryzgalov? Is he below average as well? There is no way that goaltending is the problem in Edmonton. Even if they had an all world goaltender, they would not solve the dysfunction in the way the team plays.
Scrivens for a third isn't a bad trade in isolation, but I don't think it really addresses the problems in Edmonton, so it does seem like kind of a waste of an asset. Especially since they don't have a second round pick this year, either. If Scrivens does well and signs on long term, I suppose this will be seen as a good deal down the line, but if it doesn't it will be another move in a long line of moves that just keeps the Oilers spinning their tires.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the Oilers missing some of their key up front talent like Hall when Smid was up there?
I don't think you can blame Smid for the defensive woes up there since he was the only blue liner that actually played like he gave a crap.
We're very happy with what Smid has bought to the Flames in terms of actually working in his own end.
