Count me in the group that thinks Dubnyk is half decent and will look good for the predators.

I think at the end of this, Edmonton wins the deal. They get a checking energy player that provides a small reprieve to their serious lack of grit. And the minute Rinne comes back in Nashville, Dubnyk will be relegated to backup status.
Edmonton is so bad anyways, losing Dubnyk isn't going to make much of a difference. Better for them to get a more solid goaltender, and there are a few available now.
Frankly, I see Edmonton getting the better deal.

I actually think, on a game-to-game basis, this makes Edmonton slightly tougher to play against.

Like has been mentioned... the Oilers are going nowhere so why take on a terrible contract to save a few bucks. They'd be better off trading Dubnyk for a bag of pucks than taking on this contract.

Holy craps is edm ever stupid - we should have thrown Westgarth at them for Dube. He might be a good goalie some day.
Now they will finish even lower.

i don't get this deal. picking up half of Dubnyk's salary effectively means that it isn't a salary cap dump this year as he moves to UFA. They get a certain type of 3rd/4th line player for a few seasons. They have Bryz on a 1 year deal. They probably bring up Bachman which moves Brossoit up the depth chart.
however...
if they are out there looking for a #1 (and shouldn't they be for at least next season), the other team now knows that the oilers just lost a negotiating chip because they have to do the deal just a bit more now then yesterday. I can assure you that they don't teach "negotiating by showing your hand" at MBA school.
/sarcasm on On the other hand, they made a trade without giving up one of their "stars" which should shake up the room and ultimately get the oilers closer to their goal...a draft pick. /sarcasm off
seriously, did the oilers' "brain trust that knows all about winning" see the flames 3rd period last night and panic?

and how are they going to do that exactly? Gagner won't get them a great starting goaltender. They don't have many young assets to trade off either.

at first i saw Dubnyk was traded and said "wow they actually got something for him" and now it all makes sense.
A 4th line plugger signed for multiple years, with an awful PPG and oilers retain half of Dubnyks salary
Genius work from the Edmonton management team!

When are they going to officially change their name to the Edmonton Oil Tankers?

I can see no upside to adding a 32 year old 4th liner signed for a whopping 4 years. 4 years is way too long to sign a grinder heck that two year deal for Jackman was excruciating enough. Supposedly the Oilers also ate 50% of Dubnyk's contract. Weird trade.

.921 save percentage last year, don't think Dubnyk is as good as those numbers or how bad he's been playing this year. I think he's a guy capable of playing 30 games in a decent backup role from here on out. I guess it doesn't matter when he's a UFA though.
Maybe they brought in Hendricks because he played with Gordon in Washington? Still not really a guy worth paying 1.8 million for many years to come.

Their 1st may come into play. I would think that is going to be worth some serious value. Edmonton can also trade down to about the 11-15 position and still get a great player out of it.

Similar things were said after the Smid trade, it's just the way the Oilers do things.

Would be awesome if Dubnyk went a a huge 15 game run between now and the deadline and then Nashville traded him to another team if Rinne is back.
Dubnyk last three years were .916, ,914, and ,921 save percentages on the worst defensive team in the league. They are scapegoating the wrong player.

I will say he has a penchant for letting in soft goals at the worst time but he's been far from their biggest problem and it's not like any other goaltender they have plugged in has played better.
I don't understand why you trade an expiring contract for another team's bad contract and eat the salary of the expiring contract. Taking Hendricks contract is essentially doing the Predators a favor in itself but to further help them by eating half Dubnyk's to me looks like MacT got fleeced here.

Basically my thoughts on the trade.
Dubnyk is a low risk move for the Preds. He's a pending UFA with a decent upside. He could probably be signed cheap if the Predators feel they need time to let players like Hutton and Hellberg get better in the AHL.
Hendricks makes the same amount of money for 4 years and is already on the back 9. By the end, the Oilers will probably be looking for ways to get rid of him. That's a lot of money for a bottom line player.
