I understand and actually like the model. It's completely predicated on who the President of Hockey Ops is though and I just don't think Burke is John Davidson. That's not a slight on him necessarily, I just think their talents are different.

Yeah, they mentioned that during the game too.
I think these guys need to get better sources - they seem to just quote each other.

It's clearly different than going in to run your own show, though everyone answers to someone so I don't think the difference is totally black and white.
I think the most telling thing is the flames seem to be happy to roll through a pretty important trade deadline and draft short 2 people. So how important are those positions really in the grand scheme of Brian Burke's Calgary flames? Obviously not very.
|
I for one really like Burkes vision. Entertaining, big, mean are great teams to watch. He has drafted, signed and traded for many skilled players in his day so I not worried about becoming a team full of goons.
Hiring a rookie GM and having him go make trades without sufficient time to analyze the team is plain silly. Burke was hired and did his due dilligence on Feaster/Weisbroad and came to the conclusion they had to go. I feel better with Burke making te trades this deadline than keeping those 2 and firing them in the summer.

Vision schmision, I will reserve judgement until we see something change on the ice. Feaster had that same vision before he was fired (before and after Burke). Flames are still small.
Burke is creating an issue out of the fact Flames are a small team, no debate there. Now let's see him do something about it.
Right now he seems to be prepping the fan base for something they might not like: seeding the Flames/Hit Man sound bite last week and working it in public. Drawing attention to the size of the Flames players. Maybe a fan favorite is being moved soon. Who knows?
So, maybe Burke will come through. For now I don't know that Burke has really done anything to ingratiate himself to the fan base. He is just another fast talking lawyer with better media manipulation skills than Feaster.
I am not condemning him, nor am I praising him. I just want to see him do something that moves the team forward.

You think that Burke's talk about wanting big and tough teams is just talk? Even though all the teams he has built in the past are all big and tough?
He's nothing like Feaster. Feaster had no clue and was taking his blueprint from up north. It was clear to anyone that he wanted a team of small skill guys and it was only after last year when he realized how weak that was that he changed his tune and wanted to get bigger.
Of all the things to worry about Burke, you don't have to worry about how serious he is about wanting the team bigger and tougher.

Why is everyone so impatiently wanting an improvement right now?? Let this ride out. Did anyone hear Doug McLean interview a few weeks ago. When he started GM'ing the blue jackets, Burke specifically told him to suck for a few years and get some good players in the draft. Said that's all he has to do, and he'll be alright. I believe he said suck for 5 years. Doug's comment during the interview was, Burkie, a little advice to you, all you have to do is suck for 2 years, focusing on trying to get McDavid.
Slight improvements are going to drag out the RB, two years of being terrible will turn it around a lot sooner. The moves I'd like to see is moving the veterans for picks. In theory, doing that should see us lose more and secure a best pick, also providing the youngsters a taste of the NHL. Not tanking, but providing Hartley with as little to work with as possible. Play their bags off, if they don't, their probably not cut out for a winning team going forward.
Finishing last only provides 25% you will retain that #1 pick, but gaur tees no worse that picking second.

I think the second pick (a center) will be a better one. Mactavish stated about ten games ago that they will be choosing Ekblad with their first pick.

It makes me twirl my evil moustache and wonder what Mactavish would give up to make sure that happens.
If the Flames were picking first and the Oilers second or third, would Mactavish give up his 2015 2nd and 3rd round picks to ensure he gets Ekblad? I think he might...there are no other high-end defensemen in that range and he doesn't need another forward, so he's gotta be under pressure to make it happen (that's if he doesn't trade the pick). I think for us it's not absolutely imperative we get Ekblad...we could use any of those top guys. But if all is equal, I wouldn't mind drafting him if it also screws the Oilers.
Even if Buffalo gets first overall, and we get second, I could see a scenario like that playing out as I don't see the Sabres drafting Ekblad with their depth. Basically the key is to ensure our pick is before the Oilers.

In the current snails race (with the Coiler's generational suck level) I do not see how this will happen.

I'd hope that Burke holds onto the position until the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, at which point we announce Joe Nieuwendyk as the new general manager.
Nieuwendyk's first task as GM is to draft either McDavid or Eichel (with a top 2 pick) - and for the first time in a very, very long time - we'll actually have a GM in place who isn't set up to fail. He'll have a nice young group of high end talent and a solid organizational depth. Burke can mentor him, and we can have a management group in place that will last ala Detroit/Boston etc.
If Nieuwendyk really is Burke's target, there's no need to rush anything. Give him the time to get ready to come back as a GM and have Burke run the show until then.

Slightly off topic, but Doug MacLean said on Hockeycentral yesterday that he thought the Flames brought in Feaster to be the fall guy for trading Iginla and Bouwmeester.
So, if you didn't think MacLean was an idiot before, you sure will now.

Am I the only one who wonders what Burke sees in Nieuwendyk (herein after referred to as Joe for simplicity)? As far as I know, he didn't have that successful of a tenure in Dallas and has he ever even done any scouting? I realize these are all rumours anyway, so maybe Burke isn't even considering him but I just find Joe an odd choice.

That, or the former GM has decided to renew acquaintances with his old media pals and start whispering stories out there.

I'm pretty sure I popped some brain cells reading this. Doug MacLean needs to be replaced. Such a goofball.

Sorry, it was a long winded way of saying talk is cheap.
Any one can say they want to make their team bigger, faster and more skilled. Now let's see him actually do it.

If he's wrong, which he probably is, it just goes to further show how out of touch MacLean is with reality.
If he's right, which I doubt, it goes to show how out of touch the Flames owners were with what fans could handle. We weren't going to fall apart and run for the hills just because there was no more Jarome Iginla. Hell, half of us were hoping for it to happen years earlier.

No conspiracy, that's fact. The whole 'Hit Men are bigger than Flames' media meme was a perfect example. It's overt.
