Default Man found with pipe bomb still allowed to board plane in Edmonton

http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/man-fou...nton-1.1639741

Was this news that I missed back in September? It seems like it should be national, even international, news. Just seems like it is being hushed and swept under the rug.

Quote:
A man who had a pipe bomb in his carry-on bag was still allowed to board his international flight from Edmonton last fall, even after screening officers seized the explosive device from him.
Skylar Murphy, 18, pleaded guilty last month to possession of an explosive substance in connection with the September incident at the Edmonton International Airport.
He was sentenced to a year of probation and fined $100.
The whole timing of the incident regarding notification of the RCMP and then arrest screams incompetence. Allow him to leave the country and then arrest him when he comes back? Shocked he came back! Well I guess probation and a small fine why run?

I know that the CATSA agents cannot arrest someone, but they can detain them until the police arrive. How in the world could they let him board the plane??

1. Find bomb
2. Detain person in posession of said bomb
3. Call police, wait for them to arrive
4. Saved the day

Sorry you can't take this bomb on the plane or liquids over 100ml. Would you like to store them with UPS until you return from your holiday?

Maybe it was a case of "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know that his wasn't allowed on the plane."

Years ago my wife and I were flying out of Winnipeg and my wife made the mistake of opening her bottle of water while in line for security to take a few sips. So of course by the time we got to the first officer they piped up "Nope! Gotta go in the bin!" So my wife hands her bottle over and the officer proceeds to casually THROW the bottle into the trash can 2-3 feet away from her.

At that point I lost 100% of any belief that airport security was anything more than security theatre. If a water bottle is a potential threat, fine let's call it a bomb, but treat it as such. Either you view it as a threat, or your don't, and casually banking it off the side of the trash can containing dozens of other "potential bombs" doesn't convince me of anything.

Even Chief Wiggum got things right once in a while.

It's obviously run by Burnt Face Man.

And the punishment for attempting to bring a bomb on the plane was a $100 fine?!?!!! That's reassuring.

I'm more disturbed by the man's first name being "Skylar". No wonder he wants to be a terrorist.

I saw the TSA give the shakedown to a 6 year old who was mentally and physically handicapped and in a stroller. The look of anguish on the kid's parent's faces was horrible.

Oh the humanity!

Please people, lets not start the usual TSA complaining, we all know its a joke, but a mandated joke that can't be avoided. You then get to fly through the air magically and arrive at your destination. Small price to pay. Don't make me post the Louis CK bit.

But seriously Ducay... is it too much to ask for LOGIC to enter the equation?

Well once logic and sense enter the equation, people would start to exploit that. (ie people using disabled people to smuggle things onto planes). Obviously this already happens and there are plenty of other glaring holes, but that is some of the reasoning why they're like that.
