Meh I am not upset if Joe is the guy. McPhee is an interesting candidate as well. He hasn't been able to get the caps over the top

The fact that McPhee traded Forsberg for Erat makes me want to stay further away from him than even Nieuwendyk.

Funny how Burke works the media. First mention of the hit men on the weekend (Glen Healy), then a few more, then tsn...
He telegraphs everything.

That was a terrible desperate trade. Wouldn't Burke block a move like that of he was against it?

On every potential trade, Spector always gives Vancouver as an option. He's just pulling it out of his arse.

He should just shut the hell up and focus on fixing this team instead of going to the media with loose lips. Now every GM in the league is going to know we have small guys and he's killing their trade value, blah, blah, blah... is what would have been said if Feaster was still the GM and was planting these tid bits.

I think every other team already knew how many small players the Flames had before Burke said anything. Pointing out the obvious doesnt kill their value...

The SN panel mentioned McPhee due to his time working with Burke in Vancouver. As far as I can tell they didn't work together in Vancouver...

It wasn't a judgement. And it had nothing to do with Feaster. So yeah, reading > mikeecho I guess.

The Erat trade has to be one of GMGM's worst moves, but his resume has been pretty solid past that. It's clear that Washington has been in full on win-mode for a while, but he's still been able to stock the cupboard with some strong talent through the draft. Guys like Tom Wilson, Connor Carriack have been strong picks. I was more disappointed that he shipped of Cody Eakins for Riberio.

Spector said the Predators will trade Shea Weber to Edmonton because "they need scoring" the other day on Sportsnet.
He needs to be blocked like Eklund from this site.

Based on what Burke has said, here's what's probably happening:
1) The President of Hockey Ops will set the course for the ship.
2) The GM will be in charge of getting there, in terms of maximizing assets in trades, adding free agents and conducting the draft.
3) The Assistant GM will assist the GM in doing such.
None of this suggests a conspiracy theory. It suggests more specific jobs.

One of the comments he made at his speech on Tuesday was something along the lines of the President is a longer-term role with a longer-term vision.
Probably the best way to look at it is: The GM hires the coach, and each GM will likely work with multiple coaches during his tenure; the President hires the GM, and each President will likely work with multiple GMs during his tenure; the Owners hire the President and the owners will likely work with multiple Presidents during the time they own the team (unless that owner is Darryl Katz).

Makes sense to me. So I wonder if the Flames have assured Burke that his is a ten year position?
In Toronto the team he inherited was about as bad as the Flames. He asked for 5 years, got it and was canned just as they were starting to get good. They seem to be going backwards now.
So does he get a longer term guarantee here?
Comparing TOR and CGY I don't see much difference in terms of budget, both spend. The market might be a little tougher under the current CBA. The contract dumps he keep mentioning are a pet peeve of Bettman, for example the deal Burke did for Kolzig was smart, but the NHL managed to find a way to claw back the little victory Burke achieved. So is that really an option?
Sucks for whoever he hires that Burke has already set the expectation of a fast rebuild. Feaster wasted time with all his "I did not come here to trade Jarome' and re-load nonsense. Should have hit bottom faster.
Not sure what A-level talent would want this job. 2 years of a rebuild wasted, a boss who will give your performance review on live TV and who will passive aggressively interfere through the media. Yuck.
Niewy is too smart to take this job.

Toronto is not good and was not good... they just lucked out in the lockout shortened season and squeeked in.

I agree, I think Burke is going to find himself empty handed in summer and end up defacto GM. He wants a robot he can order around with a remote control and won't get it
