Panthers are way too amped up here with all the penalties. Rivera needs to calm down his defense as they are making it too easy for the 49ers to get into scoring position.

It was a defenseless receiver hit. That is how its called now. So sadly its not a horrible call, its about if you can avoid hitting a guy who isn't looking, you have to or you'll get flagged.

The Panthers are a stupid team.

They are lucky to not have more penalties after the whistle so far.

Starting like last week for the 49ers though. Field Goals and not Touchdowns. Thankfully for them its Cam and not Aaron Rodgers who is the other QB.

The 49ers-seahawks would be just too good to cheer for the Panthers

Nope, that was why it was smart. Gonna be a FG heavy day.

Run the ball 3 times to the same spot expecting different results....horrible.

Naked bootleg Newton and release a TE into the end zone as protection if SF sniffs it out.

They should go for it though as that SF defense gets better later in the game usually and these chances may be tough to come by.

I know that this Panthers coach is Mr. Go-For-It-On-4th ... but that was stupid.

With the Seahawks defense being what it is, I really don't like either of these QBs chances next week. Only way either can win is running it down their throats.

I didn't like the play calling with a guy like newton but that that was a good call to go for it on 4th and 1. They have a great defense and they'll out kick the coverage to get the ball downfield. A guy like Ginn could make them pay.

Edit: As I'm typing this, that's just what happened.

That coverage was excellent, what a throw/catch by Newton/Smith.

Sure wasn't. At the 1-yard line with the Panthers defense, would be stupid to not go for it. And as we see from the TD, that would be why. Having a great defense lets you take more risks.

I disagree, this is going to be a tight low scoring game with both defenses playing the way they are. 3 points would have been huge. But at least they forced the Niners to start from their one-yard line, which obviously helped them out on the TD.

Except they might be up 10-6 right now instead of 7-6.

Bad choice.

Right, but the assumption would be that if you stop them, you will almost certainly get it back in or near field goal range, where you get a FG anyways. Why have a great defense if you aren't going to trust them to help you out? The Panthers have arguably the best. If points are scare, the chance to get 7 is worth it. Advanced stats show its pretty clear you should go for it.
