Very well said, H&L.

I also liken it to the relationship I have with my neighbour next door. I know he's an idiot, but I try my best to get along with him because I have to live next door to him.

Even though I'm not a conservative, I have to agree. Conservatism is a philosophy, and it's therefore neither good nor evil--just one way of doing things.

But I'd also say that part of the problem in the US is that voters don't have a choice between conservative and liberal parties. The Democrats are a center-right party, and the Republicans are further to the right--but both parties are slaves to corporate donations. Bush's administration is a classic example--in that there's nothing particularly conservative about it. He's racked up spending and deficits, while engaging in costly nation-building abroad. If that's conservative, then I'll be a monkey's uncle.

This is the guy that goes out of his way to make sure he starts off every press conference in French when Bush laughs at people singing the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish. Improving our military and restoring faded Canadian institutions is not being "Americanized".

I think all these people who believe Harper is steering our country into Bush country had too much liberal brain washing. Conservatism isn't a bad thing, even American conservatism. It's Bush's arrogance and stupid leadership that makes his Presidency a bad one.
So far so good with Harper. I've been pretty impressed and as long as he keeps the budget in check and his right wing christian element in check, I'm a happy camper.

In fairness, although Bush has done some pandering on the issue of the national anthem, he speaks better Spanish than either Gore or Kerry did--and has enjoyed a good relationship with latinos--and strong approval ratings with that demographic--throughout his political career.

My thoughts exactly. He's doing somethings that needed to be done, and I'm fine with that. One single sign that he's going Christian Zealot on us and I want him out, though.

Don't worry those Black Helicopters are only collecting babies for Harper's meals.

You do know that Harper doesn't attend church and was married in a civil service?

How about Stockwell Day, David Sweet, and Cheryl Gallant for starters?

Oh God we're so scared. I mean seriously, just because someone attends church, refers to himself as a "christian" does not necessarily mean that their belief is going to tie into their job.

Harper is doing a fine job. Moving at a faster speed then most politicians know exists.

Someone who believes the world was created 4,500 years ago shouldn't be anywhere remotely close to any public government appointment . . . . . and anyone who appoints such a chap to any public government appointment shouldn't be fussing because people wonder about his own motivations.

We can't really help that, can we?

But seriously, give the people the benefit of the doubt. They're doing a fine job. But I guess for some people they just can't get over those liberal attack ads.

I'm modestly right of center in Canada . . . . I should be an easy mark for the Conservatives.

Its simply a fact that a guy who seriously believes the world was created 4,500 years ago was given a responsible cabinet post . . . . . . a guy who once led a party where the principles managed to retain a fair share of the leadership responsibilities of the new combined outfit . . . . . . and that was a party that very obviously had a religious tilt to it via the self-aggrandizing, megalomaniac Preston Manning.

In that vein, I don't think its out of line at all for people to be suspicious and wary in the early going of this new government. Throwing a buffoon like Stockwell Day a bone didn't help the image.

If they don't like it, that's their problem. I'm the customer. If they care about what I think, they can govern in a manner that dispels the issue through time.

Attack ads have nothing to do with my opinion on the matter.

In fact, being a channel surfer extraordinaire, I really don't recall any attack ads that addressed the issue.

In his university days at UofC Harper felt the campus PC students group was too right wing.

Living in the US, I can honestly say that I didn't see a single attack ad before casting my ballot. Like you, I knew Stockwell Day was a lunatic already--not from listening to what others say about him, but from listening TO him over the years. I am one of the more grizzled types on the board--but I can honestly say that I remember his outrageous (and frequently homophobic) comments when he was an MLA.

My opinion on Day may not come as a surprise--I'm as modestly left of center as Cowperson is modestly right--but Stockwell Day's history is a huge problem for me. Not because he's Christian--I have no problem with that. (Heck--Bill Clinton is probably a much more sincere Christian than Stockwell Day) It's because his version of Christianity is exclusionary and fueled by hatred, rather than inclusive and fueled by love. Among other things, Day should brush up on his theology a little. But long story short--more important than the issue of creationism is that I think someone who believes an entire segment of the population is condemned to hell simply because of the gender of the person they choose to sleep with should be nowhere near the reins of government.

All fair and good Cowperson, but has the government ever done what the people wanted?

I agree with what you're saying.

Hedy "Crosses are burning in BC" Fry is running for the liberal leadership!
extreme wackery is not specific to Chritianity or religion at all for that matter.

That being said, Stockwell Day did an excellent job as foreign affairs critic I thought.

More of your crap about eating babies. Did you attend the Mike Tyson philosophy school? Try and bring your mind out of the gutter, eh.
