In a way, so am I. However, I feel this is kind of how I feel about the Oilers

If Messier wants to coach, maybe the guy should earn his way first in the AHL or as an assistant first. You can't just coach by cult of personality.
|
You realize we're talking about the oilers right?
Why is Craig Mactavish their gm? Why is Kevin Lowe their president of hockey ops.
In that organization you totally can get employed just by cult of personality.

That was one thing I wanted to have happen, to go through the process like everybody else and to experience that, and to give Glen the opportunity to make a decision that he feels comfortable with.
Surprising he's on the Oilers without the local press being told to wash his car, shine his shoes, and build up to some grandiose introduction...especially as Lowe's edict to the local scribes and Principe to pump Hall's tires are now over. Though he has as many cups as Lowe, so...Lowe is working with a guy with the same credentials as he has.
The extent of the vague adviser role entails probably Lowe or MacTavish calling him to get him to get a question and answer to and from Slats, and Slats has blocked Lowe's number after constant annoying calls over the years.

The real question is, how many cup rings does the office staff in Edmonton combine for?

So while he lounges on his rooftop terrace in NY, Messier will be paid to also take the occasional phone call from Kevin Lowe?

What?!?
That's, like, 50,000 Stanley Cup rings. How does the rest of the NHL stand a chance?

If things don't go well with Messier (fingers crossed), he becomes another guy that would be really hard to fire.

Lowe is horrible and definitely should go, but I don't think this hire has anything to do with a possible replacement. Messier doesn't have any management experience yet, even the Oilers aren't dumb enough to throw him into a GM or President job right off the bat. Secondly, Lowe's proven he's bulletproof. The Teflon man. Katz is keeping him there out of blind loyalty and possibly even hero worship.
No, Messier will be screwing up another part of the organization. Miiiiight be coach, the Oilers would be dumb enough to do that. Though, I don't see that just yet.

Well Messier did leave the Rangers after AV got the job so I believe Messier felt sour grapes and indeed does want to be a head coach or some position more involved with an NHL team. Joining the Oilers makes sense because he doesn't really have credentials that would entice most NHL teams to hire him in a coaching or management capacity.

I'd be careful about pointing and laughing at the Oilers right now. Our team is a bigger joke and getting worse. The Oilers direction is flawed and laughable, but they have some semblance of direction. What is our direction again? Truculence? Our front office is a mess because it doesn't exist. We are at one of the most important points in team history, at a crossroads so to speak, and we don't even have a GM or a guy whose primary interest is our hockey club. We have no reason to point a finger at anyone right now and laugh at their mismanagement. We're circling the drain and trying to take solace there is another turd caught in the same vortex. That's a new low watermark if you ask me.

it's been known since October that Messier has been an adviser ..he was with the Old Boys Lowe and MacT scouting the Rangers and Pens when the Oilers went East in October
dude gets to collect a Katz paycheck while "scouting" in the East and living at home...what a life

Until we gone through 2 rebuilds, and 3 first overall picks and still are bottom 5 in the league we can laugh at the oilers.
