I'm not even sure what this means. How does one quantify "cultured", especially when attempting to apply it to a community or social grouping?

There are so many reasons for why gay men appear less inclined to enjoy professional sports than straight men, but in the end, all you are doing is promoting a confirmation bias.

I am not going to sit here and try and justify how, or what I know about gay culture. No matter what I say people will twist it, or take it out of context. However, what I do know, and what my involvement in it has been, is moreso than 99% of your average straight dude. I have been in large settings with almost exclusively gay men. And I cannot recall a single instance professional sports, was once mentioned in casual conversation. I am not saying it is a good or bad thing. It is however, a thing. Different demographics have different interests.

Maybe classy is a better word? I dunno. I look at how my average single bachelor dude friends and myself lived over the years, and how the couple gay friends I have live, and it is totally different. We were such train wrecks, and on the other hand, their places are typically spotless. They always have such nice clothes. They always seem to have great food around. They are usually incredibly fit. And gay guys always seem to have incredible taste in cars for some reason. Any time I am doing up the paper work with an openly gay guy, they are always buying such an awesome ride.

Yes, none of this is backed by statistics, but it is stuff I have always noticed. I can't change the fact I like women, but I wish I could nail down the life skills my gay friends have.

A former Premier League soccer player came out today. Supposedly the highest-profile footballer to come out of the closet, but he is hardly a big name player. There are surely more high profile athletes than Thomas Hitzlsperger who are afraid for whatever reason to come out. I suppose if I were gay and a soccer player I wouldn't want to hear the inevitably abusive songs and chants that the hooligans in the stands would come up with.

It's great that the NHL is supporting LGBT people. Hopefully we're entering an era where people can be themselves and not suffer too much social stigma.

I've gotta say, you and I hang out with completely different members of the LGBT community. I'd say a more accurate representation is that their community spans the same broad spectrum as the non-LGBT community.

Even if he's 100 percent wrong, he didn't say anything inflammatory. I'd be flattered if someone called me cultured. I dunno, I'm gay and have loved hockey since I was a kid. The guy I'm dating is a huge hockey fan, unfortunately he's also a Canucks fan. One of my best friend's boyfriends is a bigger hockey fan than many of the guys on this site. I can name at least five other guys I know who are also rabid hockey fans. Beyond that, many guys I know are interested in other sports besides hockey. Admittedly, many gay guys are not into sports but a very significant percentage are.

Also, I live in Van and there's a gay hockey team here, one of many across the continent. Also, a fully gay soccer league, softball league, and triathlon club. Point being, lots of gay guys do love sports.

WE have a gay curling league at my club (I don't play in it)...not sure if that smashes any stereotypes though

I know a bunch of gay slobs. They like that people stereotype them as smart and cultured when they are just as dumb and sloppy as the rest of us.

The frequency of smart/cultured is equal on both sides of the orientation fence.

But the friends we end up with is a crap shoot and hardly indicative of social statistics.

Back on topic this is surprisingly cool of the nhl. Inclusion is awesome.
