Default NHL Makes LGBT History

The NHL is the first league to have a LGBT supporter on every team...

Ference is one of the Bruins representatives. Alfredsson is the rep for both the Wings and the Senators, so technically they don't have one.

Something I've wondered about... Why have we never heard about players coming out? Is the NHL just a 100% heterosexual male league? Seems unlikely

No league is 100% hetero.

Do you really wonder why they don't come out?

I wouldn't say the league is 100% hetero, but if the average frequency of homosexuality in the real world is 10%, I would bet that it is maybe 1/3 of that in men's pro sports. I think a big chunk of it would have to do with the fact that they were bullied out of the sports at an early age, and also, homosexual men, typically are more interested in the arts, than pro sports which IMO is probably a far more fulfilling and intelligent thing to be into.

Patrick Burke clarified that this afternoon on Twitter:

FTR, we counted every team that either had an active player film or acquired a known participant. And there's more coming. #YouCanPlay

Patrick Burke@BurkieYCP2h
Player transactions and filming costs make it impossible to constantly ensure players on every active roster. Team support is what counts.

Hahaha. While you may be right if you did a survey, this looks suspiciously like you've just subscribed to the stereotype that homos love the ballet dancing and fashunz and operatics, and are quite simply more cultured in general than us straight folk.

Lots of gay dudes and girls are big sports fans and many are rabid hockey fans - puck buddies blog springs immediately to mind.

Not to jump all over you for PC-related things, it just sounded funny when reading.

Way to stereotype!! I know a grand total of 4 gay people (not a large sample size, I know) and they are all hardcore hockey fans. Just thought I'd add that.
(Edited to add that I honestly don't believe you're a bigot, though)

My nephew was gay, and he had zero interest in sports. I have 2 friends that are gay that have little or no interest in sports. All three however are musicians. We have a few members on this board that are openly gay, that would probably be better to ask, but The NHL and NFL are very far down the list of activities that gay men will get together and watch. If anything it says less about straight men. Gay men are definitely far more cultured, there is zero doubt about that.

There are plenty of hockey fans that have never played a day in their life. I think thats what hes getting at. I don't doubt there are gay athletes in every league, but my guess is that it would be a lower percentage than the average population, and certainly lower than actors/dancers/etc...

New York Rangers – Brandon Boyle, Henrik Lundquist, Brandon Prust

LGBT and him in the same article probably just earned that site a million views worth of wishful thinking.

No, but excellent job of taking that out of context. High five.

I am not going to sit here and try and justify how, or what I know about gay culture. No matter what I say people will twist it, or take it out of context. However, what I do know, and what my involvement in it has been, is moreso than 99% of your average straight dude. I have been in large settings with almost exclusively gay men. And I cannot recall a single instance professional sports, was once mentioned in casual conversation. I am not saying it is a good or bad thing. It is however, a thing. Different demographics have different interests.

I can't wait till the first player comes out. I know I know that currently there is an active gay rugby ref that is internationally ranked, and Gareth Thomas came out after his retirement.
