Maybe this year, depending on what you do with Miller, next year though you should be much better than us given your prospect pool may be better at this stage. I think you have more high end talent coming up don't you?

A stripped down to the core rebuild doesn't happen overnight and some teams like the Panther, Oilers, Jackets, Islanders never turn the corner into real contenders. We should be looking at a real (not a one and done like the Jackets or Islanders last year) playoff contending team in about three more years if everything goes well.

And that's the thing. Even if he gets Crosby and we draft the best goalie since Roy we aren't making the playoffs. The Flames are about 5-10 pieces away. You cannot fix that in a season

I am going to be optimistic and say that this year will be our low point in the rebuild. We will finish bottom two. Next year bottom 5 to 10'ish. We will compete after that.
I think we have some rookies that will start making a difference next season, both within the system and one that will be drafted top three later this year. More importantly, we are on the verge of completing a major culture change that began with the sell-off last year and will be completed at the deadline this year. I think Burke will stay at the helm and I have faith that he will succeed in trading and signing a new core of vets capable of delivering a team game that will produce a few more wins and more entertainment next year.
I waited a long time for this rebuild and I refuse to be pessimistic in year one.

Yup. The California teams are very strong. And look to me like they will be strong for years to come. I think that there are lean years ahead for all three western Canadian teams. Even the Canucks.
If you look at the teams who have finished near the bottom only to turn it around quickly they all had one thing in common. High end talent already in place. The Flames just don't have a Subban, Price, Stamkos, St. Louis etc already in place. It could take years to fill those spots.

Ownership
It may be time to talk about a new single owner for the Flames.
One that wants and cares about winning.
No playoffs in 5 years now and this year they're going to blame it on a re-build.
Just more excuses.
Fans are fed up and have had enough!

Most owners have NM clauses...that they would need to waive.

Yeah!
We should get a different ownership group, the one that we have now that is willing to spend to the cap and saved hockey in Calgary by supporting the team in the dark ages when the team almost had to move is clearly not good enough.
Also FYP, please don't group the rest of us fans in with your idiotic statements.

I'd say Buffalo definitely has more high end defense prospects but our offensive prospects are weak. Unless Grigorenko can turn it around we don't have any real high end skill in the system at forward.
And that's really been the problem this season. We're on pace for one of the worst offensive outputs of all time (no exaggeration).

Yeah let's just march up to the Saddledome and force them to sell the team to someone else!
And then I guess they will magically make things better.
Fact is, these owners have spent up to the cap or very close to it in seasons past. They aren't afraid of spending money.
Other than the rumours that they didn't want to trade Iginla for a few seasons, I think they have been very hands-off and allowed the hockey operations staff to do their thing.
The situation this team finds itself in is not the fault of the ownership group.
Of all the places to point your finger... I dunno man.

You coming on a message board trying to stir up other posters does not constitute fans being fed up.
Besides, your word means exactly jack and ####. And jack left town.

What has the current ownership done to indicate they don't care about winning?
They have spent to the cap, they have fired two GM's that weren't working, they have brought in a former Cup winning manager who has a record of success at likely a fairly decent salary to manage the whole operation. They have increased spending in non-on ice areas such as scouting, stats, video etc.
Also, which fans are fed up? The fans that have bought all the season tickets that are available? The Fans that are on a waiting list for season tickets? The fans that repeatedly buy my tickets I have for sale? The fans that post 100's, if not 1000's of messages on this board about the team?

There isn't an ounce of truth there. Whatever, you can't fix stupid.
Rebuilding isn't an excuse, it is the reality of where we are as a franchise.
Every owner in the league wants to be in the playoffs. I'm sure the Flames ownership group would love the extra revenue.
Look at all the pieces on this team? Does it appear to be a "win now" roster?
Your lack of patience is disturbing.

I don't even know how to respond to this with words, so here's a gif to represent how I feel.

Pretty sure Murray Edwards wants to win a cup pretty damn bad, you could argue his desire to win short term actually led to poor long term decisions and meddling from the ownership group.
Also not like fans have a choice on who the owner is, and really we should just be happy we have a committed ownership team. Really that first statement itself makes the entire post idiotic for that reason alone.

True, but it's not an excuse it is the truth. We are rebuilding we are expected and supposed to be bad this year. I think that most would say that up until this last 10 game stretch the team over-achieved this season for the most part.

True for you personally, but I think you would actually find a bigger group that is happy they finally committed to a rebuild in an attempt to build the team right in the long term.

I don't think any fan should be satisfied with a 5 year playoff draught.

What don't you get?
You can't blame current GM or coach for the state of this team. Ownership has been consistent throughout, but they have spent to the cap, and unfortunately eventually realized that the existing core just couldn't make it happen.
Why would we need to endure the pain of a rebuild if they were already achieving playoff success?
You are a walking chicken or the egg dilemma.

I am not satisfied with them missing the playoffs so much. Nobody is. However, I'd rather see them rebuild through the draft than see them try to sign some UFAs with the slim hope of squeezing into 8th place again. If this leads to a future cup contender I can deal with it.
