Default 2013-2014 Calder Trophy Race

Just wondering if anyone has read anything current on the Calder race? I have looked everywhere and all I can find is preseason stuff.

Looked like Hertl was running away with it for awhile but with his injury I would say:

1. Lindholm
2. Barkov
3. Monahan
4. Mackinnon
5. Chiasson

I don't think you have the winner in the top 5. So far it's Krug in Boston. And MacKinnon is top 3 for sure.

Come to think of it, you are missing 2 of my 3 finalists in Krug and Jones. Had Hertl been healthy he would be in my top 3 but because he is out for the year, MacKinnon takes that spot.

Not sure, I do think his numbers are pretty impressive especially the +/-. I can see him being hyped up like Brodin was last year.

Forgot about Krug, he will definitely be in the conversation.

Would you say Monahan still has a chance?

At current paces, I think it's Lindholm's now that Hertl is done. Granted, MacKinnon is heating up.

Just to be clear here, we're talking about Hampus Lindholm, not Elias right?

Mackinnon is the front runner right now, easily IMO.

1st overall pick from last year, and now leading the point race for rookies.

Krug is tied for the lead in defensive scoring (10) with Karlsson and Weber. That alone should make him a nominee. Lindholm and Mackinnon would probably be the other nominees right now. Jones has had a bad couple weeks, and plays on a bad team (as does Barkov). Usually that wouldn't matter, but the other three all play significant roles on winning teams, which should help them in the end. Monahan's injury probably takes him out of the top three at least, but if he can keep up with Mackinnon in the scoring race he'll definitely receive consideration.

People aren't giving Krug enough credit. Where it stands right now, I think Krug would be the winner. Only halfway through the season though and MacKinnon is really starting to play well so that could easily change.

Still amazed that Krug went undrafted. I guess it just shows that teams shouldn't always overlook talent just because someone is undersized.

I think Barkov is being generally underrated by most. I would agree that MacKinnon and Krug are probably top-two right now, with Jones, Barkov, H. Lindholm and Nichishkin pushing for the third spot. There are lots of great rookies this year. We shouldn't discount performances by Chaisson, Maata and Rielly; and Chris Kreider, Mark Scheifele, and Tyler Johnson all still qualify as rookies and are eligible for the Calder. Monahan is definitely in the conversation, but he will be a real long shot with the high level of competition.

Don't forget Mark Arcobello

Sincerely, delusional Oiler Fan.

Seriously I heard them say he was a frontrunner only a few weeks ago.

I think it's funny that Barkov is the leading scorer on his team and still probably won't be able to keep up with MacKinnon in the Calder race. Not many easy points to be had on the Florida squad.

Putting that aside, what he's currently doing in Florida is remarkable and I think you'll start hearing a lot more about him in the media. News travel slowly from such a low profile market. Being the number center of an NHL team at his age is a lot to carry and he's actually doing it. Point per game in the last dozen or so games.

Completely agreed. Barkov was maybe my favourite player heading into the draft, and he looks like a great pick at this point.

I was basically praying for Barkov at the draft .. Rightfully so it seems

I've watched the last 2 games that Mackinnon has played & he looks the business. 4 goals in the last 2 games; 7 in the last 7. Now that he's playing in the top 6 I think he'll win the Calder. He's a true sniper & an exciting player!

Nichushkin could be in the mix. He puts up solid numbers playing with Seguin. H. Lindholm, Krug & Seth Jones make a case as defencemen, but for various reasons I think it'll go to Big Mac.

Current odds on Bodog:

Code:
Nathan Mackinnon 5/2
Chris Kreider 3/1
Hampus Lindholm 3/1
Torey Krug 7/2
Seth Jones 6/1
Sean Monahan 17/2
Valeri Nichuskin 17/2
Jacob Trouba 20/1
Barkov not even being listed is a bit of a surprise. Hertl probably would have been before his injury.

Mackinnon is getting x-rays done on his ankle after he took a shot to it last night, if he takes some time off that could hurt his chances a bit.
