Is there a team who's made more terrible trades than Philadelphia in the last 10 years? I doubt it.

I think the main thing was that the Flyers felt Brayden Schenn was going to be a key player moving forward and the Flyers wanted to keep him happy by trading for his brother. There seems to be an obsession around the league to have brothers on the same team, especially when one brother is considered a core/cornerstone player: Schenn brothers in Philly, Staal brothers in Carolina, and Benn brothers in Dallas are examples where the one brother was likely acquired purely because another brother was a core player on the team.

This story lends even more credence to the theory that Holmgren has a ton of dirt on Ed Snyder. How he's on the Olympic selection committee is beyond me.

Holmgren's had some stinkers, but people always forget how good some of his moves were.

Feb 15, 2007 - Flyers trade F Peter Forsberg to Nashville for D Ryan Parent, F Scottie Upshall, a 2007 1st round pick and a 2007 3rd round pick
Jun 18, 2007 - Flyers trade a 2007 1st round pick to Nashville for D Kimmo Timonen and F Scott Hartnell

It's the same 1st rounder that went back to Nashville. So effectively, the Flyers got Parent, Upshall, Timonen and Hartnell for Forsberg.

Feb 24, 2007 - Flyers trade F Alexei Zhitnik to Atlanta for D Braydon Coburn
Zhitnik regressed and then bolted to Russia, while Coburn became a solid top 4 defenseman.

Jun 26, 2009 - Flyers trade F Joffrey Lupul, D Luca Sbisa, a 2009 1st round pick, a 2010 1st round pick and a conditional 3rd round pick to Anaheim for D Chris Pronger and F Ryan Dingle
Helped them get to the SC Finals. Unlucky with his concussions, but a bold move that paid off

Feb 6, 2010 - Flyers trade D Ole-Kristian Tollefsen to Detroit for F Ville Leino
Huge part of their team that went to the finals and he also had 53 points the following year. Tollefsen never played another game in the NHL and went to Europe.

And then there's the Richards and Carter trades ... and I guess you could look at these from various angles. Personally, I think they did pretty well. They turned 2 good young pieces into 4 good young pieces while getting rid of contracts with ridiculous term. You can argue that Richards and Carter went on to win a cup, but with Schenn, Simmonds, Voracek and Couturier, they have added nicely to their young core.

I'd argue that Holmgren is not THAT bad at trades ... he's just really bad at contracts. The acquisition costs of guys like Bryzgalov, Streit, Grossmann, Meszaros etc weren't the problem ... it's the contracts that followed. Massive overpayment for some of these guys and sometimes also ridiculous term ... and the Streit and Lecavalier contracts prove that he hasn't learned anything from past mistakes.

The Flyers have drafted well under Holmgren but they have got progressively worse over the years with terrible free agent signings and trades. If Schenn was a good defenseman the Leafs would have never been shopping him for almost two seasons. Burke and Co. realized that this kids ceiling was much lower than they anticipated when they drafted him so they tried hard for a long while to move him. I don't know what planet Holmgren lives on but on earth Keith Yandle is twice the defenseman Luke Schenn is.

I know Van Riemsdyk was only 23 at the time but his career high was only 40 points. Even today, his best season yet, he's on pace for 60 points.

At the time of the trade Yandle already had his 59 point season. I know there's a lot more than numbers, but jeeze if they wanted help out front it would have made just about as much sense to convert Yandle to wing than trade him for Van Riemsdyk. I don't buy that Yandle was available for Van Riemsdyk 1 for 1, maybe something centered around Van Riemsydk. If it was indeed 1 for 1 then there was more than 1 stupid GM in this story.

I think the most underrated "bad" trade for the Flyers was movign Patrick Sharp. The guy is exactly what the Flyers have lacked in their top 6 for many years.
