7 million per isn't near as bad today as the 6.5 million he got 6 years ago.

For real. One of the first big Sutter blunders was the Phaneuf contract. I was absolutely shocked when we signed him to that massive deal.

We've all seen a ton of Phaneuf having had him here, and then having Leaves games forced down our throats every Saturday night on CBC. He comes as advertised and this board is probably more knowledgeable of what he brings than most.
Thing is, his own peers think he's overrated, his defensive game was never good and his offensive game has regressed. He's a good defenseman now, not a great one. A top-4 guy still, but not elite. And he's now making $7 million a year.
As bad as that trade was for the Flames, the $7 million in cap space is arguably worth more than Phaneuf if there was a viable alternative in free agency. The fact that there likely won't be is probably the only reason the Leaves did this. That, and the Leaves like to overpay mediocre players ever since Burke left.
Sorry to burst your bubble.

Phaneuf got $6.5 million/season from the Flames and $7 million/season from the Leafs. How is stating the obvious in that teams feel he's worth the money thinking I'm smarter than anyone else?
If anything it is you that think you know something NHL executives don't in your feeling he's not a good defenseman and big LOL to the $7 million in cap space. I guess that was so they could use that free cap space to sign Wideman and take on SOB's contract.
Sorry to burst your bubble.

He's probably going to get $7 million or more in the market. That doesn't make it a good move for the Leafs. I assume their goal is to win the Stanley Cup or become an elite team. This type of deal doesn't get them there.

Fair deal for the Leafs. Dude plays a lot of minutes against tough competition, and manages to keep his head above water. As many have said before, the Leafs didn't really have many other options to replace him.

I think we should have a separate thread for this signing.

Columbus gave 5.5 million per for 7 years to a guy who hasn't played for them yet and is already physically a mess.

Also it stands to reason that if 4 out of 30 believe Phaneuf is the most overrated, if you poll the other 570 players in the NHL there will likely be many more that believe he is overrated to some degree.
Toronto allows 36.4 shots a game. Worst in the NHL. Phaneuf is shutting down the worlds best players nightly all right.
|
What about goals scored? You think shots matter more? He's got less ES goals against while he's on the ice than Chara does. What shots! That's what matters!
And save me the assumptions on how mabny NHl players think he's overrated when you have n o idea. All fanbases and the media think he's terrible. Hardly overrated.

Remember, the salary cap is going up, so Toronto can afford this hit. Phaneuf won't even be that old when his contract is up.
|
Exactly. The cap going to hit 80 million in no time.
And how many teams can afford an 80 million cap?

So you agree with exactly what I said: poorly run teams in general.
You can quote multiple posts in one reply, just so you know, instead of making 3 or 4 posts in a row responding to separate points.

You make the playoffs once your spot is secure. A lot of games left to play.
