Depending on your profession, join lots of groups related to that industry and various skill sets. I have had a few head hunters contact me.

Linkedin is probably where it's a good thing to be a "friend" whore if you're looking for work. If your profile is basically a resume and is professional, it's not that bad to put yourself out there. That said, my whole profile isn't public,but I don't see a problem with people seeing where I worked in the past.

I am big believer in LinkedIn. More so than any other social media sites. I conduct business through it. Have been approached by a number of head hunters and just find it so much more professional than any other connectivity site.

I'm in the software industry. I haven't written a resume in years, or need to. LinkedIn seems to be all I need now. It is becoming (if not already) the go-to spot for experience and work history. Recruiters and headhunters use it all the time. It's the best social networking site IMO, and I believe will last longer than Facebook will as a service in the long-run.

I believe Jeff Weiner (CEO) really created a good product when it was needed - during the recession, and made it free, creating a huge pool of talent for recruiters to pick from.

This is a good start. I would add:
- a picture, yes, but make sure it's a high quality one that shows you being busy or doing something interesting. Yearbook photos run stale for recruiters looking at it. They want to see you engaged, and even the picture can help.

- I would cut down on your Summary. Keep it to one paragraph, five sentences tops. Recruiters need a "power" phrase about the people they look for.

- Move your skills up underneath your Summary. People want to know what your skills are right off the bat.

- Get recommendations from other people - I can't stress this enough! And not friends, but colleagues, clients or people you've worked with in any capacity. Don't add too many (seem desperate), but 3-5 is a great number.

- Add a couple of projects in the "Projects" section so recruiters can see what you've worked on (assuming its not sensitive or private)

- Sign up for a Twitter account, and cross-publish your Twitter updates. Keep your Twitter updates to industry news, career interests, or updates that people in your industry would feel is exciting, fresh, or worth noting. You have mentioned in your Summary that you can adapt to technology quickly, social media know-how is a good first glance at that.

Why do you find the paid services to be worth it? I don't see the value behind the cost. How have the added benefits helped you?

Well.. this is a bit of a thread Jesus.

I definitely don't have this problem anymore. I get contacted by some random HR person or recruiter on a monthly basis wanting to talk to me about jobs. That's been the case for the last 2 years or so, the single reason? Mobile experience.

i can see who's viewed my profile. I have the ability to search indviduals related to my industry. Truth be told, I did it when I was looking for work and then just never changed it.
Not sure what the big difference is from free to monthly membership. Would actually have to look at this point.

Holy crap. I thought this thread was new. Oh well. Still going strong 4 years later.

The last headhunter that contacted me was from Norway. I would have gone in a heartbeat if I weren't tied down here. Would love to have the chance to work abroad for a year or two.

I set up a LinkedIn account and it's a pain in the ass. I think I've only posted once. All I do is go on to accept colleagues and people who want to befriend me whom I'm not interested in.

Part of the problem is that I'm often unable to log in. I use the password that it should be, then after a few tries I change it. Then it won't let me log in with the password I just set.

Like I said...pain in the ass. I wish I'd never set it up. I may delete my account, if I could log in.

There is a "forgot your password" link. Most sites have this feature.

I check LinkedIn every few days and I do find it helpful as I am looking for anew job but nothing yet.
