Claim him and trade Stajan. There's no reason to re-sign Stajan for the rebuild. Monahan and Backlund can play the #1/2 C next season with Colborne and Zenon as the #3/4. Knight can fill in if need be.

Z's cousin is a local doctor (with whom I'd buddies). Met/chatted with Z very breifly a few years ago. He is a great guy; one of the few who can do boisterous in a non-obnoxious and funny manner. I would guess that he's be a great guy to have in the locker room.
I don't see the downside to claiming him. Win a draw in any zone and dart back to the bench. If the Z experiment fails, well... we get a shot at Ekblad or Nylander.

Claim him. Trade Stajan.
His contracts up at the end of the year anyway right? Even if it doesn't work out, what's there to lose?

So we all know that Feaster said "No post apex players", but will Burke subscribe to that particular newsletter? Cause if not I can totally see him taking a run at Konopka.

The face off aspect is a valid argument to put in a claim. But at a broken down 33 years old? Probably not.

Good locker room guys are extremely valuable in the early stages of a rebuild, it sets the tone for the future of the franchise.
Not saying Zenon is going to save the franchise, but if you can get a couple guys like him as a locker room presence around a bunch of young guys, you do it.

Asked Pat Steinberg, he's come to the same conclusion as CP I guess

@Fan960Steinberg Do you think the Flames make a claim for Zenon Konopka?

I don't really see much of a downside. He would be invaluable in assisting in teaching guys like Colborne Monahan Backlund and Bouma how to win faceoffs. He provides some toughness and is well liked. He is not a problem beyond this season as he's UFA so if he doesn't fit or isn't necessary you can easily move on.
If it means we can move an extra forward out that we might not have otherwise, that would be good as well.

Unless Burke wants the inside track on signing him he should clear.

As soon as the Flames traded Prust away for the 2nd time, I was always hoping they would get Konopka somehow. Tough as nails, and has definite good qualities, especially his face-off abilities.
I think he is a very slow skater though, and not sure he fits in with the Flames' system at all. Westgarth is very, very slow as it is, and adding Konopka to that line will make it the slowest 4th line in the league. Find myself on the fence now. Not a big secret McGrattan isn't so skilled, but at least he can skate fairly well for a guy that size. Scary to think of McGrattan as the best skater on a line. Intrigued at getting a good face-off presence to help with the youth, some toughness and a good locker room guy.
Yep, on the fence.

First I agreed with you guys that if we traded stajan, then claiming him could work.
But then I thought i would be happy if we claimed ANYONE and then traded Stajan to make it work.
Conclusion: trade stajan
