Burke's way of lowering Yandle and Ryan's value, look for them to be Flames soon.

Pavelski would make Canada 2 100%. He'd be under consideration for Canada 1 when you look at some of the other names mentioned. I agree with you in that he'd be behind some players, but I think he could make a push for the extra players. He plays both wing and center and can play PP and PK as well.

As far as Team USA goes, leaving Bobby Ryan off is a huge mistake. He's a pure goal scorer and you need that in the Olympics.

Sounds like Burke wanted to take Jack Johnson over Bobby Ryan back in 2005, didn't know that.

Quote:
Burke recalls fighting with his scouts in Anaheim over whether to take Bobby Ryan or Jack Johnson at the 2005 draft.

The scouts won and the Ducks took Ryan.

"I should have taken Jack," Burke says. "No way he lets us down for 12 days.

Kind of cherry picking stats but,
Bobby Ryan: 6 NHL seasons 165 goals
James van Reimsdyk: 5 NHL season 161 points

Based on this year, Thornton would be 1, Pavelski 2. Pavelski has had the better year over Couture. Couture has had big streaks of doing nothing this season. Was just basing it on their play this year.

With Canada announcement only 6 days away, it would be interesting to see everyone's roster. Maybe I'll post mine.

A lot of interesting Burke notes from the article for those interested.

Quote:
"You know I'm not a big Byfuglien guy," Burke notes. But he seems to have committed himself to being in better shape and improving his game. "And no one can pound the puck like him," he adds.
Quote:
Later, as a counterpoint, Brian Burke says he'd had a dream the U.S. team lost a medal game because of a mistake made by 19-year-old rookie defenseman Seth Jones.
Quote:
"I think we have to know what we're taking with Bobby," says Burke, who had him in Anaheim when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007.

"He's a passive guy," Burke says. And over 82 games, yes, Saad and or Pacioretty might be more attractive than Ryan. But Ryan's a game-breaker.

"He is not intense. That word is not in his vocabulary," Burke says. "It's never going to be in his vocabulary. He can't spell intense."

If he's not going to be put in a role in which he can score an important goal, use his skills as a sniper, he shouldn't go, Burke says.
Quote:
"I always assume a disaster's going to happen."
-- Brian Burke on Keith Yandle

On the other hand

"Yandle is picking teams apart right now," Burke points out.

"If Keith Yandle goes in our top four, I think everyone we play is excited," Burke says.

It all comes down to team composition -- hasn't it always? -- and how this team will look.

"I assume the worst is going to happen," says Burke, who prefers a more conservative approach to the fringe players so the team doesn't get caught without enough balance and get exposed on the big ice against more skilled teams.

Oh and I didn't want to start a new thread, but don't be surprised if Vlasic gets serious consideration for Team Canada on defense. Guy has been amazing this year.

Straight shooter to put it lightly. Still far more confident in him than the huff and puff Feaster gave us.

He did want Jack Johnson over Bobby Ryan but Jack had committed two years at University of Michigan and the Ducks management staff ultimately decided they didn't want to wait. Ironically, they waited three years to put Ryan in their lineup anyway.

Any idea when Canada will pick their team? Hockey Day is January 18th, wonder if it's then or will that be too late for selections?

Burke comes across as a guy who was more interested in giving a good quote than really combating someone in a debate. It says a lot that Lombardi spent a lot of time writing reports, and having videos made than a guy like Burke who seemingly has his mind made and is unable to deviate from that. I think it speaks to why Burke was fired from his last job and Lombardi has built what looks to be a very good team for the foreseeable future by making the right decisions more often than not.
