Burke opens up on reasons for trade...
Quote:
“I don’t like the way we’ve been pushed around,” the team’s acting general manager said Monday night after a weekend which saw his team shut out 2-0 at home by both the Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks. “I don’t think that’s any secret.
“And having one guy that’ll answer the bell? That’s not enough in our league.”
|
Quote:
“I’ve liked him since he played college hockey ... I liked him in the American League,” said Burke, who added Westgarth will report to the Flames immediately and he expects he’ll be in uniform Tuesday against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.
“What he brings is what we desperately need: Size and toughness.”
|
Quote:
“After Grats got tossed out of the game, we don’t have a whole lot of size and toughness left,” Burke said. “That’s not the impetus for the deal, we’ve been working on the deal for a while. But, to me, it’s time for this team to get bigger, and I think this will help our smaller players. Everybody, including our defence corps. We’ve got some smaller defencemen.
“It takes a lot of heat off the defence, and the forwards sure take less of a pounding this way. I think fear and toughness are both contagious.”
|
Quote:
“His preparation, attention to detail, and an obvious intellect and leadership skills were screaming at me ... this is a veteran guy with leadership skills,” Burke said.
|
Quote:
When asked if this was the start of deals to come, Burke said: “We’re open for business.”

I'm pretty sure that Ferland's injury will prevent him from playing anywhere for a while.

Lane MacDermid if not a typical enforcer, he's got some good defesnive skills, played a lot of PK minutes in juniors, checks hard - a tough to play against individual. Definitely a guy I'd like to keep in our system.
Ferland is not an enforcer, he may be a power-forward in the making. In fact, if there's any winger in our system with power forward abilities, it's Ferland and Poirier (and due to this they're the last guys I'd consider trading)
The very fact that he's a scary fighter does not make him a goon or something - it's just a "nice to have" feature. He's got good wheels and soft hands so IMHO Ferland - Monahan - Baertschi may be an excellent 2nd line one day.
I like what Burke is doing so far.

Which center plays out of position then? Stajan - Backlund - Monahan - Colborne

Backlund would be the obvious choice with his face-off struggles. I know Monahan is lower but I am hoping that is something that improves with age and I don't want to move the young guy out of the center position.
Cammy-Monahan-Hudler
Backlund-Stajan-Stemp

Put Galiardi in for Byron, can't get much bigger than that for a bottom six...

They might just rotate? Backlund has been playing a much better game, so I would hate to see him moved out, but I would hate to see anyone moved out from center at this point.
If Stajan is not in the long-term plans (and I would think with Burke making the call, he probably isn't), perhaps Burke is quietly shopping Stajan already? I would think his value would be greater near the deadline though.
Will really be interesting to see how Hartley manages this lineup. It is obvious Burke wants to see Westgarth a regular in the lineup, and it is anyone's guess at this point who sits and who ends up playing out of position.

I would prefer that Bouma moves up a line, Galiardi/Byron is out and Colborne centers the 4th line.
But if Bouma is going to center the 4th line then for me Backlund is the easy choice to move. His FO's are pretty terrible and have been for his whole career, he is still so soft and offensively inept and as you say it could just be a short term move while they work a on deal for Stajan (or maybe even Backlund).

“I was in the Kings’ organization for six or seven years, whether it was with Manchester — their farm team — or with the big club,” Westgarth said. “And I think that I was able to see, sometimes not first-hand but even at training camps and through the seasons, the changing of the culture ...
“To see that crystalize into a team that achieved the greatest success in hockey, I think I learned a ton out of that experience. I look forward to bringing, hopefully, some leadership and experience to the locker-room and just being a well-rounded positive force.”

Burke wins this trade by a considerable margin. It gives hope that he will be able to get a 4th round or better for Stempniak.
In the high participated rate the prospects threads Nemiscz came in at #29 He was rated behind Harrison (a 2013 6th round pick).
Westgarth provides something that the Flames total lack.... McGrattan with his spectacular spiritual recovery story does not inspire fear with anyone. He does not create space for anyone as he would never grab a Dustin Brown or Regehr or Seabrook or any non-goon player and even talk to them and does not play mad.

First of all, the fact that he doesn't play mad is probably a good thing for a man of his size and particular skills. If he played mad he would be suspended for 20-30 games every season. The fact that he plays under control and doesn't take stupid penalties is actually a very important quality in an enforcer, otherwise you're John Scott or worse.
Secondly, if you think McGrattan doesn't inspire fear in anyone who isn't an enforcer, you need to go talk to Andrew Alberts. I bet he feels differently.

All you're looking for is a reckless player who has no respect for the game. "Playing mad" is useless, because generally speaking it just leads to playing careless.
Though, after your delightful attempt at creating the "Ricardo Grit Index" to explain the value of certain players (despite it actually not working at all) I generally take your evaluations on players with the tiniest grain of salt.

Not to defend ricardodw but IMO the most useless thing in the NHL is a goon that only fights other goons... which is what McGrattan is.

Why is everyone taking Byron out of the lineup on behalf of Galiardi? Is it just due to his size, or is there another reason? Byron has played much better than Galiardi during his brief stint here IMO.

I understand I'm piling on here but I have to call you out on saying Grats doesn't inspire fear. He plays with controlled aggression and is fearless. Haven't you seen his death stare? I'm fairly certain not a single player in the league thinks oh yay Grats is out there when he jumps over the boards for his shift.

That doesn't defend him, because he's suggesting Westgarth does just that and does it better than McGrattan

Yeah, you really see it in the after the whistle scrums around the net. Lots of pushing and shoving, then Grats skates in, tugs on the back of someone's jersey and just stares at him. Things usually calm down pretty fast from there.
