Where to get an inexpensive Oil Change?

I know its an easy thing to do, but I just never learned how. I have to go somewhere, but I'm sick of getting dinged $45 every time. Any suggestions?

On my old car (dealership changes the oil on my current one) I changed the oil and would end up paying around $30 for all the oil and the filter. The mark up isn't too much compared to most automotive work, but I was a student so that money had to be saved...to be put towards beer.

Wal-Mart does it cheap, but you get what you pay for. $45 isn't bad, I think they do it for somewhere in the $25-35 range. I have had several bad experiences with them though, and will never recommend them, but if you're in it for the cost-effectiveness they are the cheapest place I know.

Yeah, but I find that the savings of doing it yourself isn't worth the bother. I spend $10 on oil and a filter, then have to get the coveralls on, change the oil. Then you have to find somewhere for the used oil, because apparently storm sewers "are not an appropriate place to put used oil."

(I'm kidding about that last part.)

Me, I wait for the Canadian Tire flyer, because about once a month they put the basic oil change on for $20. Either that, or ask my buddy who works at a garage to take it in for me, and I pay $35 then.

Changing your own oil is a perfect beer drinking activity.
Take out the plug, drink a beer while it drains, put plug back in, fill with oil, drink a beer.
I do mine and my wifes car at the same time and then do a bunch more maintenance stuff.
Spending a day out in your garage doing that stuff, I find enjoyable.

Take it to minit lube, just make sure they put the plug back in before you hit the road.

Damnit, I dont know how to change my oil! If you dont learn something like that on your car of course you are hesitant to do it! I'm going to Wal-Mart! Hahaha. I have to learn this soon.

Lol, really? Damn....if only I'd known that sooner....

I agree, I change my own oil on my car (basically a high-performance street car) because I use specific oil and filters, but for my Jeep or truck, minute lube and $45 because its not worth the hassle and I dont really care what type of product goes in. Not to say I use cheap crappy oil, but standard or mid-grade stuff is plenty good for the average passenger vehicle.

I put synthetic in mine and usually pay around $55 at Walmart. I used to go to Canadian Tire but found the wait times too much and it was a few dollars more.

Its prohibitively expensive and they never tell you when they started or when they plan on finishing.

I know this is a 6 year old post... but damn I wish I was only getting dinged $45 an oil change. I'm sure I'm getting royally screwed, but between the synthetic oil and the "speciality" filter (diesel jetta) I'm always dropping about $120 a change.

Still getting a better deal than Edmonton.

I used this in Vancouver and it works great. Paid $30 for 3 Oil changes. It looks like the Calgary affiliate is Tirecraft, so you'd have to be okay with them.

Mine was thorough a Groupon though. I quickly scanned this one for Calgary but I couldn't find where to enter the "2014" Promo code.

Put me in the "I can change my oil, but won't camp."

I find spending the extra 40 or 50 bucks to have a dealer do it, gives me peace of mind. You would be amazed, some of the major problems our techs have caught on a basic oil change. I have seen people come in for a routine maintenance, and walk out a week later with a new engine under warranty.

Off warranty, I see the appeal to save a few bucks, but even then, a trusted mechanic can catch minor things before they snowball into major problems that the average Joe won't.

I was mentioning the same thing to a coworker today as my rig was in for an oil change.

The shop noted that I had a couple of leaky axle seals, and fortunately my rig still has a few Kim's left on the warranty.......

I can remember buying a book of ten oil changes from my ford dealer for $140 back in 2000.......

I'ved used LubeCity on MacLeod Trail with no problems and actually good service - just a little out of my way.
