Why do you have to bow out? If you are an expert why not state what you do and provide the facts. Stand up for your opinion. If you are right I'm more than willing to accept I was wrong and agree with your stance.

I was honestly curious as to what sort of insight you were bringing in. It'd be nice to have someone with a bit of insider knowledge on the actual logistic and financial aspect of the business on a highly professional level.

The fact that you won't does not give me confidence that you have any idea what you are talking about.

^^^ Or that he actually works in the industry. One wouldn't bring that up unless they were willing to provide a bit of insight to elaborate their point.

I think "work in the industry" is a very vague term and likely covers what he does.
But if he is a camera man for local Winnipeg station does that offer him any insight into what TSN should/shouldn't do? Of course not. But still working in the industry.
I think it is clear from his posts in this thread that whatever he does in the industry he has little to no understanding of the business that TSN is in.

I think you'd quiet a few people if you just said WHAT you do. You don't have to say who you work for, but stating what job it is you actually DO makes it a little easier for people to take your opinion at it's proper value, instead of the extremely ambiguous "I work in the industry."
I mean, I could say "I used to work in the industry" and really, all it actually means is that I helped direct a televised football game once, 7 years ago.
Either say what it is you DO, or don't use experience in the industry as reason why your opinion holds weight.

If his opinion is still that TSN should spend the money on sending people to every game they broadcast when it will bring in minimal added viewers and minimal added revenue when they can buy the rights to show a game for much cheaper then I am not sure what job he has that will make people change their views on the value of his opinion.

Being a camera man, makeup artist, runner, etc doesn't make you any more of an expert in the business than an oil rig worker being an expert in the oil and gas business. You said in a post you expected TSN to send crews down to televise a low interest non-Canadian game that they could otherwise show at a fraction of the cost by showing a US feed. You do realize that it cost $$$ to send crews down to televise a game right? You do realize that TSN is in business to make money not lose money right?

I've seen CBC do this. In the days before every single playoff series was on tv, if the Canadian/CBC designated series ended early, CBC would send their entire crew to an American Game 7 (ie, if it was the only Game 7 in the first round).
The most famous example would be Bob Cole calling the famous Pat Lafontaine quadruple overtime goal because it was the only series left. Also more recently, IIRC, they went and did the Anaheim/Phoenix Game 7 in the early 2000s. Perhaps it didn't make business sense but CBC have never ever taken a hockey feed off of someone else.

Apples and Oranges. Having a full crew ready to work a playoff game, having that game not happen and throwing that crew at another playoff game where ratings are much higher than regular season games between American teams is not even close to this guys idea of putting a crew together and sending them down to broadcast regular season games between American teams at a huge cost instead of just using the already existing American broadcast.

True. Although for those Game 7s, there are American crews/networks doing those games. CBC could just use them and give their crew a night off.
But I guess in their opinion, it's not the same which is probably true.

Did CBC have agreements in place to use those American feeds?

They probably could have negotiated it at the beginning of the season but never considered it because CBC sends people everywhere. TSN in it's infancy was using American feeds so it was happening.

I wonder how many hockey fans are like me.
1) only watch their favorite team
2) watch CBC HNIC as nothing else is on and it is a tradition.
3) could really care less about the world jr's
4) if it is not the Olympics don't care about international hockey
5) don't care about any jr hockey
6) watch playoff hockey but will do other things if the match up doesn't interest me.
7) don't watch much other sports on TV
Are there more of fans like me or more "true" hockey fans. If more are like me then rogers will just be fine.

I would think the biggest group is fans who watch hockey maybe one a week and during the "big" games.
I think there is probably a pretty close mix of people like you and people who watch more hockey than that. I may be way off though because most people I know watch more than just their team and know about more than just the NHL/Olympics.

I work as a freelancer in the television sports business and have worked for every major network in Canada, Have also worked at 8 Olympics and a few World Cups all in the television field
Last year I did over 60 NHL games in both the US and Canada
The industry is small enough that having said what I just said there will be people who if they read this will know who I am
hope this satisfies you all
