Actually, Simmons patent is not on the actual technology of pocket coils, but its the shape of the coil.
Simmons has basically an inverted coffee cup. They have a wide base, with a narrow top. That allows them to attach their coils approximately 3 inches down, instead of attaching at the top (which most other manufactures do, like sealy, kingsdown etc) Attaching it lower, allows it to be an "independent coil" for the first 3 inches, but with the amount of foam in these mattress, thats all you require now.
Like other people said, lay down on a mattress, but take 5 minutes. Any mattress you lay down on right now is going to feel better because its new, but taking the extra couple min will allow you to settle into the mattress and get a better feeling for it.
My 2 cents, don't buy tempur pedic. IT is a traditional memory foam mattress, but the hype comes because they have done a phenomenal job in marketing themselves. I believe their budget was close to 100 million in advertising, that is close to, if not more then the top 3 put together. (sealy, simmons, serta). There are better specialty foam mattresses out there other then tempur. Just not as widely known.
If you have more questions you can PM me, I do work in mattresses and Furniture. or ask here and i'll answer, and do my best to give a proper answer and maybe others will benefit.

Aren't the memory foam mattresses much warmer than other kinds? Are there some that breathe better than others?
We got a supposed high-end mattress a few years ago, but it really hasn't worked out.
What's the main difference between the major brands? Best place to buy? Sleep country advertises a lot but it doesn't necessarily mean it is any good

Yes, memory foam mattresses are warmer. Thats because the memory foam uses your body heat for it to contour to your body. So its a foam that is heat activated. In a normal room it can take anywhere between 10 - 20 minutes for it to properly contour to your body. Thats also why putting memory foam mattresses in basements, and whatnot, they feel harder, because it is naturally colder there, and takes longer for the foam to "activate"
sleep country does advertise a lot, most places will have a decent selection of mattresses but it really comes down to having someone that can help you narrow it down.
Main difference between the brands, Sealy does a triple offset coil, also they do a pocket coil, but if your buying pocket coil, buy simmons, it is, in my opinion the best pocket coil out there at the moment. A triple offset coil is that there is three sides closed off, with one side open. they are then attached at the top with a helico wire, which kind of connects everything and makes it the coil it is. This coil is more or less designed to push back as much as you push in, hence that's where their support model is (there is a lot more to it, but harder to explain without having an actual model of it in front to show certain features)
There is only one specialty foam on the market that actually dissipates heat from a person, its the simmons Air Cool Memory foam. They have a hybrid mattress (specialty foam on top, with coils underneath). They have other mattress called comforpedic, which is just this foam all together. They (simmons) bought out a company for the use of this foam solely, because it is pressure based, and not heat based, therefore it reacts faster (comes back to normal) and it dissipates heat.
Keep in mind, most memory foam mattress, especially these gel infused from sealy, serta, will have an inch, if not 2 of the gel infused memory foam, then normal memory foam, then just regular block foam to support the bottom. The benefit with the gel infused stuff is that it does cool down the memory foam, but at the end of the day, its still memory foam that is heat activated.
Things to keep in mind, sorry if i confused you, easier to do this in person with samples and mattresses to show the difference.

Best mattress I've ever slept on was at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. To this day I regret not pulling the sheets off and checking out the name brand and style.
Back in the day I also got a pretty good night's sleep on a water bed.

Thanks for the info hatty!
How does the foam compare to the pocket coil or other types for motion transfer? I look at the"bowling ball mattress" and can't help but think that the sheets well cause transfer anyway..

Not a problem hope I could help, If you want you can come down to where I work and I can show you a couple mattresses and show you kind of how things are, don't worry there won't be any pressure to buy it will be more of a informational thing then anything. If you would like to come down, PM me and i'll send you the address and times i'm there.
As for foam mattresses, they are pretty good in regards to motion transfer because as you move around there are nearly no vibrations throughout the foam especially memory foam, so whoever is on the other side should not feel you moving, unless your almost jumping and moving the mattress. Having a foam mattress, sometimes it does become hard to move around because your body is in the "groove" that you have created.
Yes the bowling ball bed is known for its minimal motion transfer. Now that's from the coils itself, because the only coils that you are affecting are the ones directly underneath you. Other companies like sealy will use foam to help deaden the vibration in the springs to prevent motion transfer.

I have/had a memory foam (the better posturpedic one) and hate it, seems good for a while but gets very uncomfortable after a long enough time. Not enough support and a lot of restless nights, just switched to a kingsdown pillowtop with a firm midsection of the mattress for better support. Infinitely better than foam, will never go back to that.

Unless you're in Ontario, that unfortunately won't work very well :-)

With heat, movement, etc, looks like this pocket coil or similar is what I'll have to go with. My wife is usually too hot at night as it is, and having a bed that is even hotter will make those hot summer nights even that more unbearable.

Oh that makes sense, hahaha yeah you are a little far. I personally sleep on a Simmons. If your concerned with heat... Definitely stay away from memory foam, worst choice at that point. For coil mattress look for some mattress that have silk and wool in their topper that helps the mattress breath and your body to almost self regulate with heat because it will somewhat dissipate the heat.
I think sleep country should carry the sealy cloud, those are the hybrids I think I mentioned, if not search for a Simmons sleep gallery and check out their true energy mattresses.... Or if your willing to spend a little extra, their beautyrest black lineup. They are quite the mattress line. It's a braided steel wire that is used to make the pocket coil. Definitely a story behind it with some merit. But they are not cheap.

Hahaha maybe, I know a fair bit in the companies that I deal with... More specifically serta Simmons sealy and King koil, more so Simmons and sealy. I know the general knowledge when it comes to other companies like kingsdown and temper and whatnot, just not as advanced. I know how their made and pros and cons but to get into the nit and gritty of it... It's hard, and mattresses is a very personal item. I've had customers who don't like how the quilting feels and therefore they don't buy, then again I had a gentlemen who liked how it looked and what it's name was... (it was called passion).
But I do think there's too many salesmen who say anything just to get someone to buy and mattresses is something you can't do that with so I try to be the opposite... Give enough knowledge that a proper decision can be made. It does backfire because you can definitely confuse someone even more then when they walked in but oh well.

Have had a memory foam for about a month now and its been great. Have had sex on it a couple of times and it hasn't been too bad. A little bit of sinking but could be worse I guess..
Edit: Point of post: I don't think this should dissuade anyone from going memory foam imo

Best thing we ever did was dump the queen size and get a king. Hell, even if I was single, I'd stick with a king size bed over the queen size.

I'm pretty sold on the memory foam, mostly based on my back issues, and user reviews seem pretty solid. The brand isn't as important, but I do want good quality. Our current spring bed is sagging and that's the issue there. Its withing the warranty period, but it sounds like the warranty claims are basically impossible...so while all the warranties say ten or twenty years I kind of factor that out.
From what I can figure out, the memory foam doesn't sag, and that's a big deal. I'm not saying that I never expect to replace my bed again, but the sagging issue with my current bed has me pretty jaded against the coil mattresses I guess. Maybe that's just the wrong approach or I am completely wrong though?

I didn't want to create a new thread for my question, but figured this may be a semi-related thread to ask this.
I have a spare room that I'm looking to turn into an office/guest room. I think a bed would be a little too big for the mixed purpose I'm turning it into, but I think a futon would be nice. I've always hated futons though, but for the purpose I'm using it for, I think it'd be perfect. Only occasional use, having the guest over every now and then. Except, I'd like to get a really comfortable one! historically, for me, any futon I've slept on has been pretty damn uncomfortable. Anyone have any idea on what to look for when looking for comfort in futons?! or maybe have a suggestion for places to check out?
