Because the owner bought the team to leverage them into an arena deal to boost his real estate holdings. He got what he wanted, why does he care?

Always had a lot of respect for teams like Nashville that consistently stay in the hunt even with their self imposed salary cap.
(Entertainment value of style of play still debatable however..)

Geez. The bottom 4 teams on that list are all still freakin horrible, and in the basement of the league standings again this season.

Tampa Bay at 25 is interesting considering they were the last team to win the Stanley Cup before you started counting.

Haha for VCR - #3 on the list and 1 appearance in the SCF.......even worse for SJ - as they sport a perfect record for SCF appearances....

I'm a little surprised to see Nashville at #7. While they've been consistently good (until now), I don't think they've ever had an elite team.

There were a couple years I'd have considered them elite:
2005/06 - 106 pts - 6th/30
2006/07 - 110 pts - 3rd/30

really want to make it look bad for the Oilers just make it after their playoff run.
33 points clear of the Islanders and 47 clear of Columbus.

Kinda cool that if Buffalo wasn't so terrible this year we'd be in the top ten. Shows how good those 06 and 07 seasons were.

Fascinating chart.
It says so much about the relationship between good GM'ing and maintaining a competitive core group of players.
Nashville was a shocker for me, given that they've never really had a top-tier forward.

It would be even more impressive if the list showed their average payroll alongside. Nashville would have, by quite a bit, the lowest payroll of the top 10 teams. That's why it bugs me when people slam Nashville for not having accomplished anything. They are a very, very well run team that has to fill almost every position with players developed internally. I really hope Burke will be interviewing Fenton.

Only team that's provided stability through the same coach year in year out. You either do it Trots way or the highway, instead of the players running the show.
There's something to be said for that.

Carolina winning a cup was such a joke. Don't get me wrong, so glad they did given who they played, but such an outlier on that list of championship teams.

They finished 1st (or 2nd...) in the east, Eric Staal scored 100 points and Cam Ward won the Conn Smythe. Rod Brind'amour was an elite faceoff guy putting up points and Cory Stillman finally learned to play in the playoffs. There was no joke about them winning the cup that year.

They had a decent Forsberg for a while. He did spend more time on the ice whining than actually playing mind you.

I agree they were good that year (although their point totals aided by a terrible division) but even with keeping much of their top players, they were not able to maintain an elite level after that season. That was more what I was referring too.
