I think Brossoit is a much better prospect and is a much better prospect than Roy was at his age.
Fair enough, I didn't see much of Roy in junior so my evaluation isn't very valid. Just forming my opinion on the fact that many people were pretty optimistic on Roy while he was a junior goalie, but when he graduated to professional leagues he couldn't translate his game. Brossoit is at the point now where his junior stats are still making him look very strong while he hasn't yet really proved anything at a higher level yet.

I was never crazy high on Brossoit, mainly because of how good those Oil King teams were he played for, and the fact he never really had a very impressive SV% even with a great defensive core in front of him. His size and flexibility always kept me intrigued as to what he could become as a goalie, but it was always going to be a bit of a gamble to guess if he would make it to the NHL ever.

The Brossoit/Keetley comparison is solid for a number of reasons. He could prove to be a success, but I've always remembered Keetley's similar junior stats & similarities in his style etc.

No I agree, the Flames should take a goalie every two years in round 4 or 5 in perpetuity.

They should draft more late round Euro goalies. Lundqvist was drafted in the 7th round, look at how that worked out.

Agreed ... we should just keep drafting Lundqvists!

Oilers have recalled Horak from OKC... potentially will play against the Flames tomorrow. Had 11 points in 18 games for the Barons

YES!!!

I actually won the work tickets to the game tomorrow night. Although I hope to see him lose in dramatic fashion since he does play for the Oilers. I'll still wear his jersey though (Flames one).

Surprised he was even in OKC as long as he was.

If he plays, figure there will be a Horak tribute video for his return to the dome?

Still looking like a great trade from the Flames standpoint. Smid has been a nice addition to the backend and looking at the farm Horak and Brossiot would still be buried on the Flames depth chart

Sad he's now a part of that mess up north but glad he's getting called up. Always liked Horak, great hockey sense IMO.

I think I'll actually shed a tear if I see Horak in Coilers silks. Always really liked him, pains me to see him play on those losers. On the other hand, good on him for making it to the NHL again.

Still a fantastic trade for the Flames, Smid is awesome. A true warrior ... I'm sure he would have done very well when D. Sutter was coach in Calgary.

solid in the ECHL. 7-5-0 in 12 games with a 2.16 AA and .926% save percentage. Was ECHL goalie of the week a couple weeks ago when he posted back-to-back shutouts for the Aces.

Here's a piece from the Herald about him: http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...121/story.html

12 games played in the ECHL (Alaska Aces) with a .926 SV% and a 2.16 GAA

Great might be a bit of a strong word.

Smid is a medicore bottom pairing guy getting paid at market rates. I think it was a fine addition for a defensive starving team, and we didn't lose anything we are likely to regret long term. It was a minor transaction that fit the need of both teams, the way trade are supposed to work.

Disagree, he is a solid defensive d man who is a shot blocking machine.

I posted this over in the Prospects thread last week...

When he first saw he was getting a call from MacTavish, he thought he was getting called up to the Oilers. Imagine his shock when he found out that not only had he been traded, but the Flames were sending him to Alaska. After a rocky start with 4 losses in his first 5 games, he has now won 5 of his last 6.

It would be nice if Burke could move MacDonald and clear some room for Roy in Abbotsford (although, I think he likely ends up somewhere else next season, assuming Gillies turns pro).

In other ECHL news, the Oilers sent Brossoit down to Bakersfield on Wednesday. He got a shutout in his first game back in the ECHL, and now has a shutout in 3 straight ECHL games. The first two shutouts were against Bakersfield when he was in Alaska. Brossoit has struggled in the AHL so far this season, putting up a 2-4 record and three straight losses with OKC before the demotion.
Roy has put up one more win since I posted that, so his record in Alaska is now 7-5 and he has won 6 of his last 7 (and four in a row).

Brossoit has also played one more game. He finally got scored on in the ECHL, allowing 2 goals in a 3-1 loss.

Calling Smid a bottom pairing defenseman is controversial, but fair enough. Calling him a "mediocre" bottom pairing guy is absolutely ridiculous. If he's bottom pairing, then he's an awesome bottom pairing guy.

Personally, I think he's a decent #4 guy who has played pretty well for the Flames so far.

I know it is highly doubtful Roy turns into anything like the other goalie that played with that name but wouldn't that be doubly awesome just because Edmonton gave up on him?
