I think it's going too far that it's now missing the point of the draft. Chistov instead of Kovalchuk in Atlanta means the Jets would have arrived much earlier. Upshall and Whitney instead of Nash and Bouwmeester would never have given Florida or Columbus a chance to climb out of the gutter.
I understand the want to keep the Oilers from getting another top pick, but the draft was designed to give terrible teams a chance to draft players to turn their franchises around. Throw in a lottery that prevents teams from tanking for Lemieux which subsequently means sometimes a team drafts Barker instead of a Malkin is a lot better than forcing a team to fold.
Also, I think there's some irony that this was in response to Crosby going to the Penguins which followed a much closer form of this draft than the current one and would be met with the exact same criticisms.
