While ignoring skating, break out passes, moving the puck well in the offensive zone both on and off the PP...

out of curiosity ... teams have 2 years to use 2 compliance buyouts? So lets say Clarkson has an awful season... just awful. Could he theoretically be bought out after next season?

Seriously?? Comparing the two are like comparing apples and oranges. Wideman improves the Flames power play last season. He is what the Flames were lacking an offensive defenseman who are pretty good with breakout passes. As for his defensive game, i did not see much flaw on it last season. There are a lot of Clarkson out in the NHL that can be had for much cheaper price. I wouldn't pay that much money on a borderline 2nd line 3rd line player.

Teams have the ability to buyout two players over the course of two years. The Leafs bought out Komersarik and Grabovski so they do not have the ability to do another complaince buyout.

And he turned down more money from the Oilers. Something special.

And who says nothing ever good happens to the Oilers? Dodged a major bullet there. This looked like a bad signing the day it was done and looks even worse today. I thought Nonis did a good job in Vancouver but he had one of the worst off seasons in recent history of any NHL GM.

While the Oilers dodged a bullet, their media is trying to put the team in the path of the second shot. The Edmonton Journal is pushing to have the Oilers give up actual assets to acquire Clarkson:

It might actually be smart for the oilers to ask the Leafs to keep some of Clarkson's salary and trade for him. Clarkson at 4 mil is probably worth something for the oilers

The Leafs have no more buyouts and need to get rid of Liles too so they might be willing to retain some of Clarkson's salary to bail from the awful, awful contract

I had a problem with the length of that deal but I am not convinced that Clarkson is a total bust. He has averaged 25+ goals his past two seasons so I don't consider him a fluke. He's never going to be a big point getter but the only reason why he doesn't average 20+ goals outside of injuries and suspensions the next few years is him not being a good fit in Toronto.

After his hot streak to start the year, Clarkson had a pretty awful season last year as well, putting up only 8 points in his final 36 games. So in his last 60 games Clarkson has 7 goals and 14 points.

He's obviously not as bad as he has been showing in Toronto, but he's still a soon to be 30 year old 3rd liner who is signed until 2020. Just an awful, awful contract. Nonis' last two offseasons as a GM (2007 in VAN and 2013 in TOR) are up there with some of the worst in recent memory by an NHL executive.

Question - say Clarkson gets 0 points for the rest of year and even the Oilers won't take him in a trade. Could the Leafs trade him to the Flames and the Flames then do a compliance buy out on him (since the Leafs have used theirs)?

Obviously this wouldn't happen in Clarkson's case since its too early for them to admit what a colossal mistake this was... but curious.

No clue why Clarkson got that kind of money. He has a crazy hot streak to start, something around 10-12 goals in his first 15 games. Something crazy like that and then 2-3 goals in the last 30 or so games.

The only issue with that would be that contracts that were signed after the CBA came into effect aren't eligible for compliance buyouts.
