Is that what it is, or is it that they're making it easier for existing brewers to sell directly to the public?

Because if they're going to allow smaller size breweries ... that's HUGE news.

Had two interesting ones tonight -

Founder's Brewing Sweet Repute(basically a re-brew of their Nemesis 2009) - a wheatwine aged in both bourbon and maple bourbon barrels. A little too sweet, needs some time to mellow

Founder's Oatmeal Stout on Nitro - exactly what a nitro stout should be. Delicious.

Now this is really cool:

Weight is the enemy of the backpacker, as every added ounce can lead to increased muscle strain, fatigue, and the desire to turn around and stay at the lodge.

For fans of craft beer, enjoying a decent brew while hiking or camping away from the car usually involves lugging around heavy cans of beer, which can turn a lovely trek into a grueling slog through the woods.

But now the folks at Pat’s Backcountry Beverages have created a solution – their new Brew Concentrates come in featherweight 50ml packets and can be reconstituted with carbonated water (courtesy of their trail-ready 16-ounce carbonator bottle).

Are there any really good Canadian breweries that don't get distributed out of the country? Heading up there next week, and just curious if there's anything for which I should keep an eye out.

Where? The smaller ones are relatively regional and get established locally before they start shipping.

I would say most of the good Canadian breweries don't get much distribution out of the country.

Where "up there" are you going?

I'm heading to Ontario. I've had Unibroue, Dieu Du Ciel, du lac St. Jean, and Steamworks.

Central City Red Racer IPA is distributed in Ontario. It's a nice hoppy beer if that's what you're into.

I think Howe Sound brewery has some distribution in Ontario. They make tasty beers.

Tree Brewing also has distribution in Ontario and they also make tasty beers.

Mill St. makes what I would call Solid but not inspired beers.

I've heard good things about Big Rig and Amsterdam breweries, but I haven't actually tried them.

I'll drink pretty much anything, aside from sours and saisons - they're just not my thing.

I've heard a lot of good things about Great Lakes(Ontario, not Ohio), as well.

There are two micros I really like out of Canada where you can literally pick up any style of beer they make and it will be good; Paddockwood out of Saskatoon and Tree Brewing out of Kelowna. Both are available in Ontario.. not sure how available but they are in there somewhere.

Cool. A lawyer and nanobrewer buddy if mine has been lobbying for this for some time. Wonder if he had a role in the decision.

Ontario has lots...you can find a good overview here: http://www.ontariocraftbrewers.com/ (Ontario craft breweries website)

Listing of breweries: http://www.ontariocraftbrewers.com/breweries.php

For example...

Mill Street is one of my faves, lots of selection: http://millstreetbrewery.com/
Muskoka: http://www.muskokabrewery.com/
Beau's: http://www.beaus.ca/
Cameron's: http://www.cameronsbrewing.com/
Amsterdam: http://amsterdambeer.com/

I found Great Lakes hit and miss to be honest: http://www.greatlakesbeer.com/

A lot of people seem to like their Devil's Pale Ale, but I was not much of a fan.

Amsterdam I like, but nothing spectacular in my opinion...

Beau's is kind of neat as its all natural I think and they have a family farm or something you can go out to.

I like Muskoka's cream ale.

Nicklebrook is pretty good and on the smaller side: http://www.nickelbrook.ca/

On the non-ontario side, some Maritime beers. Propeller brewery (http://www.drinkpropeller.ca/ ) and Garrison brewery (http://www.garrisonbrewing.com/ ), both from Halifax, give you some maritime flavour. I like Garrison, although they are hit and miss.

There's also http://www.quidividibrewery.ca/ in newfoundland and pumphouse from new brunswick http://www.pumphousebrewery.ca/

And on the west coast there is Tree as people have noted, but not much of a fan of them at all. Just my personal taste.

Mmm, Canadian microbreweries...

If you are in Ottawa at all, the Three BBrewers (Les 3 Brasseurs) had pretty good beer. They have a location in downtown Ottawa and another in Kanata. This is in addition to the suggestions that Flash and RedHot brought up. Beau's would probably be my number one choice overall.

Actually just checked again, and The Three Brewers also have a location in Toronto and one in Oakville.

Thanks for the help, folks. I'll definitely be finding some stuff to try and, most likely, bring back home with me. Going to hit Three Brewers while in Toronto, as well.

Enjoying a few of these tasty little beauties tonight:

So, beer is insanely expensive in Ontario. I don't know how anyone there can afford to buy beer on a regular basis. A case of Molson, the cheapest option, was $41 at the LCBO(not for me).

I picked up four beers, and have tried three of them. The Winter Ale from Great Lakes was very tasty. I also picked up two Nickel Brook beers, a barrel aged stout that was "meh" at best, and their Head Stock IPA, was was pretty damned tasty.

I picked up a bottle of Absinthe Stout, but haven't cracked that one open yet.
