John Scott really is the most apt comparison in today's NHL.
I suppose Hal Gill is a possibility, but even Gill had more of an offensive touch.
I think if Kanzig wants to find a spot on an NHL team, he's going to have to be seen as a guy who drops the gloves and plays on the edge, like Scott.

Disagree to no ends. He doesn't actually fight that much anymore. Since he has com back to the royals . he's skating better and is more of the shut down type.
Edit. I know all the royals well including magement. He was a fighter on his own according never asked to be. As from what I understand from talking with him Calgary's brass doesn't want him to be that kind of guy.

I realize that. And Datsyuk was a 6th round pick, while St. Louis was undrafted entirely. But they are the .1%
Setting the bar for a 6th rounder @ Datsyuk, and @ St. Louis for an undrafted player, is just absolutely absurd though.

I realize that he doesn't fight... as much as before.
All I'm saying is that he's probably going to have to if he wants a career in the NHL.

Once again read my add on the last post . from talking with him that's not what the Calgary brass wanted out of him.

Just to throw my opinion in there, i would have to interject that i was totally blown away watching him this past summer at the scrimmages. He won't ever put up alot of points, but he does everything well-and his skating was impressive. I was a skeptic before, but he kinda made me a believer.

Yes. Kanzig can skate and he can play defense. He is only a prospect - but he has the potential to be an NHLer.
I think some people suffer from a prejudice that says that big = no hockey skills / only a goon.
Watch him play - he's a real prospect.

I think the problem is that there is no accurate comparison to Kanzig playing in the bigs.......

I would say Jim Vandermeer is a pretty accurate comparison. Kanzig is bigger and maybe even a bit meaner, but they are both physical stay at home defensemen that will do anything to help their team, and that includes fighting.

Vandermeer had waaaaay better offensively numbers in junior. In fact, I don't think any successful defenseman prospect has ever had such low output.
They may be out there, but I've looked a bit and I can't find one

If he can play D and make a good first pass thats all I care about. Wouldn't care if he finishes with zero career points if he can do those 2 things.

Gill was pretty low (he dominated in high school), though it's hard to compare CHL vs NCAA.

Just have to wonder, if he can't even move the puck as well as even Regehr, he probably won't get much of a chance in the NHL to begin with.

Marc Methot and Bryce Salvador are probably the lowest producing d-men in junior currently in the NHL.

Regehr and Gill we're exponentially better offensively than Kanzig.
Even if he's not expected to put up points in the NHL, you would think you'd have to have some hockey sense. Kanzig's totals almost seem like he avoids scoring
