Also strange that Kanzig got same dollars as Klimchuk. Typically 3rd round picks don't get the same dollars as 1st rounders unless they have done something to increase their value (eg impressive showing at wjc, playoffs etc)
|
According to the Flames releases - Klimchuk gets an NHL base salary of $832,500 and Kanzig has base salaries of $575,000 for yr 1 & 2 and $650,000 for year 3.

Stats wise he compares to Chris Breen... except Kanzig is a lot more of a fighter than Breen. Breen fights.. but Kanzig is a much more frequent fighter.
Probably just means that if Kanzig doesnt pan out as a defenseman he could become a 4th line John Scott/McGratton type guy.

I don't mind this, but I am a little concerned about guys like Kulak that do not have contracts. I'd hope they'd get one soon as well.

This is what seems weird to me. Each of those guys is better than other prospects like Martin, Lamb, Cundari, and Bancks. All 3 of those guys do have NHL potential (likely not more that 2nd/3rd pairing D-man and 3rd/4th line forward in Gordon's case.
I don't see the rush with Kanzig who has a year plus to sign, yet not getting those guys under contract.

I don't have high hopes for Kanzig. He has all the attributes of a strong Junior player with no NHL future. Very few Junior defensemen who don't gets points stick in the big leagues. He has the size to physically dominate in Junior, where that won't be the case in the NHL. It has already been mentioned but even straight shut down d-men, put up points in Junior. Sure it's great if you can block shots and take the puck away but if you don't have the pucks skills to move it out of the zone or get good shots on net, you are useless.

And could be noted he's now 6'7 244lbs.
Freak of nature comes to mind with this kid.

I really don't understand why this is done already... I'll be happy for him if he makes it, but he isn't going to play on the Flames or Abby this year anyway, right?

They offered him a contract and he accepted it. The contract doesn't start running now. if you know you're going to sign him eventually.. might as well do it now and let the guy get a signing bonus now so he isn't living off the $50/week he gets in the WHL.

He could play with Abby after the Royals season is over. Next year its likely back to Junior because he cant play in the AHL fulltime.

Haha wow.
I know people tend to overrate their favorite team's prospects, but really?
Try John Scott as an NHL comparable.

Maybe everyone got offered these smaller contracts, and Kanzig accepted it, while the others are seeking more.

Come on. John Scott isn't even a good goon. He's a straight up Moron.
I also don't value Luke Schenn too highly. So maybe the overvaluing is on the part of people who actually think Schenn is good.

If he could end up like Hal Gill 2.0 I'd be thrilled.

Kanzig is very raw but the kid possesses something Scott never had or will ever have...a brain.
Plus he's a very good skater for his size.

(Assuming he makes the NHL) At 6'7" and 240+ lbs I think he will be able to physically dominate. Kid's only a little smaller than Chara.

Not that I'm complaining about getting our 2013 draft picks signed, but I wonder why they are getting signed before our 2012 CHL draft picks are?
Kulak and Culkin are IMO very underrated D prospects. Good skating, smart, puck movers who both remind me somewhat of TJ Brodie.
Also Coda Gordon from that draft as well.

Considering Burke said the drafting was subpar under Feaster it wouldn't be a shock if some of them aren't signed.

Who knows? but me I've never been impressed with any of those 3 in my very limited viewing. Would not be surprised if none get a contract.
