It's us in Alberta that gets screwed since all hockey games will be on Sportsnet. No more quality broadcasts if they're going to favour their production to larger markets.

The Canucks are in the first year of a ten-year deal with Sportsnet. So, no.

Plus you gotta figure TSN will try and poach some of Sportsnet's other properties (namely getting full EPL rights).

Sportsnet has all the Blue Jays and MLB playoff games. (they will obviously never lose the Jays since they own the team).

Sports broadcasting is a bit unusual though, in that, with any broadcast, you actually have a monopoly of supply - it is total viewership that you are after.
Simply getting the rights isn't the end of the story for broadcasting - you have to attract viewers in order to grow revenue.

Yes, that is correct about the decade long contract extension the Canucks and Sportsnet have, it was agreed on back in February.

I mean it's great that TSN is locking up all these guys now ... but what happens when their revenue takes a huge hit next year without any games?
It's great to have bluster when nothing has changed yet, we'll see what happens in a couple years.

TSN will still get solid ratings. They're not going to stop covering the NHL. They are well established as the best sports station in Canada. Their ratings will be fine, and in turn their revenue will be fine.

I am guessing they are just going to pick up more games from NBC, maybe even a package from Rogers
to go along with them working the regional Jets/Leafs/Canadiens

Did we ever find out what Bob was referencing when he said this:
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 4 Dec
I can tell you there are some developments in the works that will ensure TSN's hockey coverage remains first rate for a long, long time.

Broadcasters work cheap. The salaries of a the on-air talent is a small fraction of TSN's expenses.

I would assume he was referring to the long-term deals for himself, Dreger, Ward, Lebrun, and Duthie.

You do realize that Bell owns TSN right? BELL. They can afford a panel of fairly cheap hockey broadcasters

What am I missing?
Why would TSN want all of these hockey analysts/play by play/commentators etc locked up?
Why would all of these analysts etc want to re-up with TSN?
Why is everyone high fiving over this? It seems a little silly. So all of the TSN on air talent will be living it up on regional broadcasts?
How much of a win will this feel like three or four years from now when new talent has moved into the SN spots and these guys are all long forgotten?

Just wondering, does Sportsnet have any good broadcasters/commentators? CBC at least has a couple, but I can't think of any on Sportsnet.

This is TSN is giving Sportsnet a mighty F U by sweeping up all the talent.
Now Rogers is relegated to using clowns like Kypreos, Maclean and Shannon.
Sportsnet should seriously consider grooming some younger broadcaster and analysts to rival TSN and replace the circus panel that they have now. It might take 3-4 years, but they've got lots of time.
