And fair enough for wanting a good crop of Canadian guys on your team, there's a lot to be said for the "good Canadian kid" aspect. However if the best player available is Osama Bin Dangles, I'll take him 10 times out of ten.

But the whole BPA argument is garbage for the most part anyway.
Sure, for the first few players it is mostly black and white when one player is clearly better than another, but after that it is far more nebulous. First of all, what defines BPA, and second, who defines it?
With any two reasonably comparable players, one is better in this regard and another is better in that regard. It is a question of choices.
Take Nichushkin and Monahan for example. Many experts would have listed Nich as the BPA. Not me. IMO, Monahan has more of what I think you build winning teams with.
You can talk BPA all you want. I will choose players that you build teams with all day long. And for me, that doesn't mean a collection of mostly Europeans.

Did Nieuwendyk do ANYTHING good as a GM? You know, aside from giving Adam Pardy $4M bucks?

Geez I hope not nieuwendyk. Old players from the glory years is too oilers for me.
Other than that, don't care. Burke is the GM regardless of the title his assistant has. Just get on with it. The worst case scenario is not a yes man but someone who muddies the waters and then gets fired in 18 months so the flames start over on their start over.

My money is on Poulin, too, though Hextall is the guy I really want.
I've warmed slightly to the idea of Nieuwendyk. Historically those guys who make a lot of mistakes their first go-round tend to do a whole lot better with their second kick at the can (see: Riesborough, Doug. But also Bob Murray, Don Maloney, Doug Armstrong. I am sure there are others.) Having said that, most in that list cut their teeth for a number of years before getting another shot.
Still, it does seem that you get a guy's best work after letting him make his rookie mistakes elsewhere. With the Burke safety net in place, and a strong Asst. GM, I don't think Nieuwendyk would be a terrible hire. Though he's certainly not my top choice.

sureLoss should be GM. He knows what's happening before it happens. Just makes too much sense

Sportsnet said Buffalo will be interviewing Futa. If they have permission, no doubt Calgary will too. Still holding out hope for him.

I could see Nieuwendyk too. He'll want to work again and realize that he'll have to move his family or probably take a major demotion. He actually did well in Dallas, the Neal trade is overblown. Some of the undrafted guys he signed there are pretty impressive and he stole Lehtonen.

Nieuwendyk is getting a lot of attention because he's a former Flame, but Burke couldn't care less about that. Wouldn't be surprised if Burke waits until the off-season to hire someone.

Nieuwendyk worked with Burke in Toronto also.

And we all know Burke likes to go back to the well.
My money is on Nieuwendyk also. And I don't think he's much of an improvement on Feaster, unfortunately.

First-time GMs usually do not explode out of the gate into instant greatness. Someone linked to a complete run-through of Nieuwendyk's tenure as Stars GM in another thread, and it isn't in its entirety terrible. I think he could have a lot of potential in his second go, and under the watch of a more experienced former manager to walk him through the day-to-day stuff.

Unless LA wants Futa out of the division/conference if he goes. I could see them granting Buffalo permission in season and not Calgary because of that reason.

In my experience, when we have to rationalize moves by coming up with reasons why they might not suck, they end up being the wrong moves. Sure, Nieuwendyk might be a diamond in the rough. Just like Cervenka, Jankowski, and Ramo. Or Jay Feaster, for that matter.
Question marks like that are almost always question marks for a reason, and Nieuwendyk feels no different. If we're rolling the dice on someone I'd rather it be someone who doesn't have a terrible track record attached to his name.

I kind of doubt that it will be Nieuwendyk because I don't think he actually wants to live in Calgary. I have very little to back up that opinion, but I have a feeling.
At any rate, given that Burke seems to love this town, and it would appear that he is set to make it his permanent home (again, maybe I'm reading too much into it), I think the new GM will be someone who sees Calgary as the place he would like to be long-term, over and above getting the GM gig of an NHL franchise.
I have no idea which of the prospective candidates are very "pro-Calgary", but I suspect that their respective opinions of our city will have a large impact on the search.

It is utterly amazing how many of CP's members have written off Jankowski. Or at the very least are lumping him in with all the other failures.
Second year of college and a bust! Sheesh some of y'all have no patience in seeing the process through to the end.

I totally agree with this; I hope we either bring someone with experience or someone strongly linked to a winning organization. There are a lot of things winning organizations do differently; Iggy talked about some of that when he was in Pittsburgh. We need to develop a winning culture and that has to start from the top. From the outside it looks like players love playing for organizations like Boston, Pittsburgh and the players seem to have a real outgoing sense of "team" When Boston played here I couldn't help but notice how Boston treated Iggy like he was part of their party
and they were not going to let him go! The emotion was raw when Boston scored it was like "take that", they take winning and losing very personally.
