The fact that he has very little NHL experience would be mitigated by having Burke.
The only thing that I wouldn't like about the hiring is that he would no longer be with the Hitmen.

Yes. In fact, hell yes!
A few of us (me included) here on CP wanted Kisio hired back when Feaster was still the "interim" GM and King was conducting a "thorough search" for a full time GM. TBQH Kisio doesn't really seem like a Burke hire to me, so I would be fairly shocked if it happened, but would thoroughly support it.

Jim benning:
amateur scout for the Anaheim Ducks (1993–94)
Scout for the Buffalo Sabres (1994–98) then Director of Amateur Scouting (1998–2004)
Assistant GM of the Boston Bruins (2006 - present)
What are his responsibilities in boston as the AGM? I'm seriously intrigued. He hits the scouting experience that Burke had on his list...

From Boston's website.
Quote:
Jim Benning
Assistant General Manager
Jim Benning is in his eighth season with the Bruins and his seventh as the club's Assistant General Manager, as he was named to that post on July 14, 2007. In that position, he serves as an advisor to General Manager Peter Chiarelli on all matters pertaining to player evaluation, trades and free agent signings, in addition to assisting the General Manager in overseeing all individuals in their specific duties for the Bruins.
Benning joined the Bruins in July, 2006 as the team's Director of Player Personnel and was in that position for one season before assuming his current duties.
He came to the Bruins after twelve seasons in the Buffalo Sabres organization including eight seasons as that team's Director of Amateur Scouting. In that position, he oversaw the club's scouting staff and led the team at the annual NHL Entry Draft, in addition to scouting prospects at the high school, college and junior hockey levels as well as in Europe.

I'm putting my chips on that this is the one Burkes giving the eyeball on. Given Boston's ability to grind out other teams? Yeah. He's a good fit. My vote is with him.

Liking the sounds of Benning. Perfectly suitable for what Burke should be looking for. Boston is really the only team in the East that is composed like a proper western team. Hard to fault Boston's drafting record as well, as typically they've had one one of the better drafting records of the bunch.
Just don't go for a retread like others have been saying.

He was picked 2nd overall......someone must have had a feeling he'd be pretty good.

By the Thrasthers... he was a below average starter before the trade.
Again, I can't give credit for luck.

Wow, what a short-sighted post. So all goalie trades are pure luck then? That sounds quite idiotic...

Skaters are unpredictable to an extent obviously, just not as much as goalies.
I'd even say Gillies is more likely to amount to nothing than become an NHL starter.

His bad move (which wasn't too bad at the time, but didn't work out) proves he was an idiot, but a good move is simply brushed off as pure luck. Got it.
Anyways, I wouldn't be opposed to Nieuwy. He was a first time GM, and he is bound to make mistakes - every GM is, especially when they are new to the role. Burke would be the check in place (as he would be regardless of which GM takes over). Not my first choice, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Actually outside of Seguin and Hamilton (who pretty much were no brainers) Bruins recent drafting has been horrible. One of the reasons they fired their head of amateur scouting in the offseason.

His last 3 seasons for Save % in Atl.
Not exactly "unpredictable" or "pure luck". He wasn't a bad player.

Re: Joe Nieuwendyk
He fired Dave Tippett to give the head coaching job to Marc Crawford.

Nieuwendyk not interested in Flames GM job
Quote:
Despite his Calgary connections, it doesn’t appear Joe Nieuwendyk will emerge as the next general manager of the Flames.
According to Hockey Central analyst and former Star Marty Turco, Nieuwendyk hasn’t been contacted by interim GM Brian Burke and is not interested in the job at this time.
